Well, they've got a new head coach, and someone else is going to steal a GREAT head coach that the Pack passed up.

Mike McCarthy was hired today, the OC of the 49ers last year and the Saints OC 4 years before that. He was hired b/c he was the quarterbacks coach in Green Bay in 1999, the year Ray Rhodes as head coach won something like 4 or 5 games.

Right now, without seeing any results, I'd say this was a bad hire. There were two or three more qualified coaches available, one being Mike Sherman, and the other being Jim Bates, the current DC.

Bates today is very unhappy, with quotes like, "it's done, I'm out. I'm going to pursue other jobs now. I was just as or more qualified than the other guys." It appears that right now the Packers will lose Bates as DC, and he'll land a head coaching job somewhere, the Pack missed out big, IMO.

Hiring McCarthy is an attempt to hang onto the belief that the whole team must cling to every last little bit of Brett Favre. He's in the top three QBs of all time, but his career is winding down, and there will be football after Favre, wether the GM sees that or not. I fear hiring McCarthy is a "quick fix" to try to bring Brett back for one more year, rather than a hiring that will embrace the long term vision of the Packers management.

And what is that vision? It's to win the superbowl. Are the Packers going to do that next year? No. Three to four years from now, with the right planning and development of Aaron Rodgers the Packers will be there, with an experienced D, amazing WRs and a dominant running attack (with the RB they will draft this year or next year). Hiring a guy to keep Favre happy next year isn't going to take this team to the superbowl, what will happen when Brett retires, it will be like hitting the reset button.

It's a rant, I think the Packers have lost the next best head coach in Bates, hopefully McCarthy will prove me wrong.

Excuse the ignorance, but is it a done deal that Favre will be back next year? Was McCarthy the deciding factor in BF staying on? Now that he's the new HC, what happens if Favre changes his mind in the off season?

There's a reason I only follow I-AA football, and that reason should be clearly indicated by the questions above. I should stick with what I know close to nothing about. #shocked

slightly #offtopic

I'm going to do something sacrilegious here, but I am going to question everyone hanging from Favre's ballsack. Is he one of the most entertaining players of alltime? Sure. Top 3 QB ever? Based on what? Here are the QB's (from the "current" era) that, IMO, had better careers than Favre:

-Montana
-Young (career shortened by concussions, still has more rings)
-Aikman (career also shortened, still more rings)
-Brady
-Moon (debatable)
-Elway
-Marino (debatable)

There are yet more from past eras that I would put higher than Favre

-Staubach
-Bradshaw
-Starr
-Tarkenton
-Unitas
-Dickey

We may have to add Peyton Manning to the above list at some point in the near future.

People love Favre, and that is fine, but he might not even crack the top 10-15 of all time.

First the On Topic question, the hiring of McCarthy I believe is in hopes that Brett Comes back since Mike was his QB coach for one year in 1999.

It is not a done deal, Favre said he'd come back if the team was built and capable of being playoff/superbowl bound, but if there's going to be a few "rebuilding years" then he'd prefer retiring and letting the next Green Bay QB get comfy in the system.

UM2002, I humbly disagree. Favre is 2nd in passing yards and TDs only behind Mario. I believe he's also the only 3 time NFL MVP, but could be wrong there.

OK Here's my top list

1. Montana
2. Elway
3. Favre
4. Young
5. Marino
6. Brady

--------

Bart Starr & Jonny Unitas of the "old school"

Peyton Manning could shatter all sorts of records, but he's going to have to win some Superbowls or he might just become another Jim Kelly.

The Pack were 8-8 in Rhodes year as coach. I remember the whole Jesse Jackson and Rainbow Push people complaining about how Rhodes has a non-losing record in Green Bay but still was fired.

Hopefully the dreadfulness I see in the earlier posts come to fruition. All I want to worry about in the NFC North is the Bears.

Re-Max: I am certainly not looking to pick a fight with you, my good man! My only point with Favre is that he seems to get a great deal of props compared to accomplishments. I know that his career numbers are great, but so are Marinos and very few people pimp Marino for greatest QB ever. In fact, people go out of their eay to point out that Marino is not the best ever in spite of having the stats. I just think Favre gets more props than he deserves considering that for every game he has singel-handedly won for the Packers, he has also single handledly lost about as many by throwing incredibly stupid picks. But I respect your point of view b/c he is a great QB and I know Packer fans and most NFL fans love him.

I'm done.

Bad, bad move for the Packers. I mean, this guy got fired from his job with the Saints prior to getting hired with the Niners. In his one year in San Fran, he presided over one of the worst offenses in the modern age of pro football. Their offensive output of 3,587 yards was the fifth fewest since the NFL went to the 16 game schedule in 1978. The team finished with franchise lows in TD's, first downs and yards passing. Some of that was a lack of talent, true, but the OC has to shoulder some of the blame. Another year like that and he would have been fired in San Fran. Then what - QB coach somewhere or OC at a mid-major college program?

Yeah - go get that guy to be your head coach. At one time not so long ago, the Packers had the best front office in football. Today, they just might have the worst. Oh wait, there's always the Lions. Ugh. No wonder the Vikings fans have hope.

Then once he's name HC he fires all of the asst coaches and Bates quits. I fear this team could be just as horrible next year.

Bates probably won't get HC consideration this year, either. Some team is going to get one hell of a DC next year. I wonder who Kubiak has in mind for Huston.

On the short list to replace Bates is a few DCs that have been recently fired, like guys from the Jets and from Buffalo. But it appears the guy with the inside track is Bob Sanders, who was Bates DL coach for the last 5 years. I think any Packer fan will admit the DL play this last year was vastly improved than from years before. http://greenbaypressgazette.packersnews.com/archives/news/pack _24347735.shtml

Here's another aritcle of who McCarthy has fired, and who he decided to keep. Edgar Bennett is going to stay on board with the RBs. http://greenbaypressgazette.packersnews.com/archives/news/pack _24328045.shtml

The Pack has a new DC; hope he's learned a lot from Bates!

Looks like the Pack now have most of the coaching staff in place, up next is the draft. I'd like to see AJ Hawk in the 1st round and then possibly a RB in the 2nd that could mature into a solid starter in 2 - 3 years.
