You seem to imply the republicans are just filthy rich. I think your eyes need to be opened up:
C'mon Grizbacker, don't play dumb. You're smarter than that.
I think many business owners and corporate CEO's (large and small) are republican because lower taxes increase their bottom line. That's fine, I personally think that attitude is a little short sighted and there's more to life than the bottom line, but I understand where they're coming from.
But you and I both know there are extremely wealthy people in this country who are making absurd amounts of money off of government subsidies and/or contracts that are a result of nothing more than bribery. I'm sorry that the majority of these are Republican, but that's just the way things are. It's dissappointing that you can't at least admit that shortcoming of your side.
As for rich democratic congress people (off topic), well they are kind of like Viet Nam vets who are anti-war. Even more impressive because they've seen the other side and show enough independent thinking to actually disagree with the popular sentiment. The CEO of Patagonia owns modest houses, keeps his production in the US, pays his workers well, and commands them to go surfing instead of work when the waves are up. He also manufacturers his products from recycled goods - not because its cheaper, but because its the right thing to do. I guess selflessness is another democratic tendency.
All we know is that we arrive at this juncture because of high taxes and despite high taxes, because of low taxes and despite low taxes.
The thing trickle down apologists fail to realize the finite nature of wealth, and the overwhelming influence of greed. Unregulated capitalism winds up in same place that soviet style communism does.

Trickle down is a theory, not a law.
Sorry, Ronnie was mistaken.

While many on the left are like the Patagonia CEO, many others just talk a good game. for instance:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi proclaims support for unions, but she is part owner of a luxury resort, vineyard and restaurants that are non-union. She advocates tough laws enforcing environmental rules on the private sector, but she is part owner of an exclusive country club that failed to comply with environmental rules for the past eight years – including a failure to protect endangered species.
"I don't own a single share of stock!" filmmaker Michael Moore proudly proclaimed. He's right. He doesn't own a single share, but owns tens of thousands of shares, including almost 2,000 shares of Boeing, 1,000 of Sonoco, more than 4,000 of Best Foods, more than 3,000 of Eli Lilly, more than 8,000 of Bank One and more than 2,000 of Halliburton, the company Moore vilified in "Fahrenheit 9/11."
Noam Chomsky calls the US a police state and the Pentagon "the most hideous institution on earth," but much of his entire academic research has been subsidized by the U.S. military.
Barbra Streisand promotes environmentalism, but drives an SUV, lives in a large mansion (with the heat cranked up) and has a $22,000 annual water bill. She's been known to drive to appointments in Beverly Hills in a motor home because of her aversion to using public bathrooms.
Ralph Nader plays a role as populist not interested in wealth and materialism, and pretends to live in a modest apartment, but actually lives in fancy homes registered in the names of his siblings.
These examples and many more in Peter Schweizer's new book, "Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy."
Like it or not, with capitalism, there's always going to be those who slip through the cracks. You either deal with them by keeping their numbers minimal and their standard of living reasonable or they become a bigger and bigger problem. Ronnie's system increases their numbers without solving the accompanying problems - so does Bush's. In a nut-shell, the old line - build schools today so you don't have to build prisons tomorrow is spot on. Texas can only execute so many.

Well put yourself in the shoes of a low-income family. What do you do then, are you just SOL? You're poor so you don't deserve it. Is that advancement in civilization, is that improved culutre? Personally I don't think it is.

Payton I dare you to actually answer my question. If you went your whole life living at or below the poverty level, working full time and providing for your family, where will you turn to pay for unexpected medical costs/prescription drugs. Or send your kids to college so they can become better educated and not end up like you. Are you really just out of luck, tough break?
It's an example of history repeating itself Payton, it's happened over and over.
Since when has working hard been a failure?
The lower class becoming the majority of the population in a country and revolting against the elite few. It's something that has happened throughout history.

This may be, but the USA has private citizens that own guns. I know this has happened before, but it would be hell on wheels for any group to actually start anything in the USA. Just my opinion.
I am getting a little tired of people defending the poor. If you actually work in this country at any job you can succeed. "You guys like to say nobody chooses to be poor" I disagree there are a lot of people who flat out refuse to work (see New Orleans)
There is a very small segment of the poor that are there because of mental or physical maladies. I have no problem helping these people, but anyone capable of working should be cut off and forced to pull the wagon.
