I just wish things were simple again. When football players played football, went to class and avoided the intoxicating aroma of dog fighting, bar fighting, drug running, money laundering.

Its easy for you guys (me too) to sit up here in Montana and criticize folks coming from much tougher situations than us.

Truth is you are afraid of these people. If you saw a group of guys walking down the street sporting "thug" gear, you would cross the street so as not to cross paths.

But here is a good question to you "thug" haters who claim race isn't a point - do you cross the street if the guys are white dressed exactly the same way?

Picture a "thug" in your head... what race is he?

I think you all know the answers, whether you will admit them or not.

Most Montanans are ignorant, but it isn't because they are inherently bad people. Most of us grew up with probably about 90% whites. It is something we (Montanans) can get uncomfortable with because it is simply outside our norms.

Hell, just the other day I had a relative tell me "That's what Kramer gets from recruiting black players from the inner city"... I couldn't believe he said that.

Great post Harm.

Lately if I am shopping anywhere and I get the gangsta thug helping me or the tattooed freak with all the piercings, I find management and tell then right in front of the idiot why I am going elsewhere. I won't buy products, food, or services from businesses that prop up that BS.

They hire those people to keep certain other folks from patronizing their establishment. Its not good for business to have too many 'uptights' hanging around.

The association of the hip hop lifestyle to being a thug is as ridiculous as the association of the heavy metal lifestyle to being a satanist.

I usually giggle when I see a group of white kids dressed like that. I mean seriously.. a group of any other race kinda looks like they'd put a whipping on your ass. A group of white kids.. please. It appears their parents have gone retarded when they dress them in the morning.

BULLSHIT

First when I see a group of thugs walking down the street I go out of my way to plow right throught them, so the don't think everyne is affraid of their baggy pants.

The ignorant Montana thing doesn't fly either. Sure many of us grew up around a majority of whites, but then we left the state for college, work etc and got robbed, shot and beat up by people of certain races. We then come back to Montana and know what the rest of the country already knows.

So when a large % of crime is committed by a certain demographic, is it racist to point that out?

When dog fighting was almost wiped out of the country 20 years ago and a certain demograpic has it springing up all over the country, is it racist to point that out?

I say no and people of all colors should be accountable for their actions. Now swing away on the economic factors, poverty and other excuses levied to make people feel better about themselves.

Yes, most businesses prefer thugs and gangs hanging around since they add so much to life, business, and the community.

Uptights is a racists term that singles out whites and paints them in a bad light. They are so bad for business.

Exactly. Enough with the damn "ignorance" statements. There is a direct correlation between the gangster image and crime. And who is responsible for that image and the majority who dress like that? Open your damn eyes.

Alpha,

If you don't frequent businesses that employee people with tatts and piercings (I saw a girl yesterday with 2 stud-type-things sticking out of the top of her WRIST!!!), I'm afraid it won't be long before you won't be able to buy anything, anywhere!

You are close to being right, but if enough people complain the business' will get the message.

I am alos going out of my way to make fun of fat women that insist on dressing like Brittney, Christina and Paris. "Muffintopping" in public will not go without a loud, sarcastic comment from me.

We need to fight back.

Yeah, sitting there in Montana, the golden jewel, judging people from much tougher places is arrogant. Thank God Browning doesn't have any problems. Rocky Boy is the Ritz right?

Sorry, every state has problems. Hell, at least some of the tallent makes it out of the hood to get national attention... be it good or bad. I'd like to see one multi million dollar ball player from a Montana Rez get bad press for shooting his mouth off.

My worthless... very worthless two cents.

Exactly my point. A group of white kids, dressed like that, who could be living the very same "thug" lifestyle their racial counterparts are living, are not seen as a threat simply because they are white. They are "posers" in the mind of most, yet they could be just as if not more dangerous than a different race dressing in the same fashion.

I've heard way too many racist, ignorant, redneck comments in this state for you to persuade me that a lot of Montanans aren't ignorant. I've seen people get genuinely mad when they simply see a black person, to the point I'm afraid they might actually do something about it.

If this is true nobody would blame you for dropping a hate crime on these ignorant white bastards.

I have said it once and I will say it again. Any person has the right to say anything he wants about any group of people or single person. As long as it's just words, no harm no foul.

When they act physically or intimidatingly on their actions, that is when racism starts. Words are not racism, actions are. Words only hurt when you enable them.

I take serious offense to your post, it is degrading to those who grew up in Montana and seems quite small minded.

I grew up in Missoula (from about age 3). My exposure to people from other races (I am a white guy) was limited somewhat by the demographics, but certainly did not make me "ignorant" or feel "outside the norm" when I dealth with people from all over the world later in life.

The first black guy that I remember, and not because he was black, was michael ray richardson. I was probably in about 6th grade when I saw him play. My opinion at the time was that he was a great bballer and never even considered his race.

I also remember a boxer (cant remember his name, but he was a middleweight fighter who got national attention) who was an american indian. I remember reading about him in the paper and seeing him jogging on the highway a couple times. Again, I thought it was cool that someone who lived where i did was a great sportsman.

My dad was a professor at the U and we used to go to some sort of "ethnic" night where people from all over the world presented something about their culture and there was a big banquet with food from everywhere (first time I ever ate curry).

When I went into the Marines I was thrown into the biggest mix of races and racial attitudes that I have ever experienced. I had friends, and enemies who were from all walks of life. Some of my friends were black, some of my enemies were black. Some of my friends were white, some of my enemies were white. It came down to who you were. Inner city kids mixed with country white and there were few racial tensions. It was how you acted and what you liked to do. The biggest country bumpkin from the south ended up good friends with the kid from the worst neighborhoods of chicago.

I dont think that the gangster mentality is a race thing anymore. There seem to be more suburban white kids who try and be "ghetto" than kids who grew up in that enviroment. Maybe its a counter culture thing, like the hippies from the 60's and 70's.

I do agree with the poster that basically says that a thug is a thug. If you want to be a gangster crook then I have no use for you, regardless of ethnicity.

I also agree with the poster who says that the gravitationally challenged women who dress like Brittany Spears, Christina, or Paris should be shunned.
