With everything that is going on in Bozeman, if this is true, this is really the last thing that this school needed...

From KPAX:

UM cornerback faces murder charges in California slaying

June 13, 2007 09:20 PM MDT

Authorities say University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson is in custody in Los Angeles County on murder charges. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Antelope Valley Press newspaper of Palmdale, California, that Wilson is accused of shooting and killing a man on June 2nd.

A deputy, Kelly Simon, identified Wilson as a University of Montana football player. Wilson was being held in Los Angeles County on one million dollars bail. Wilson turned himself in to authorities Tuesday in Lancaster, California, which is about an hour northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities say he was involved in an altercation between 29-year-old Kevin Smoot, and a woman who is related to Wilson. Los Angeles County authorities says Wilson went to Smoot's home on June 2nd and shot him. Policy say Smoot was shot in the upper torso and later died.

Wilson, whose given name is James Leon Wilson , is a San Diego native who came to Montana right out of high school. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

This is terrible news. It is sad that Wilson put himself in this position and that the Griz lost a quality player.

Breaking News

UM cornerback faces murder charges in California slaying
By the Associated Press

University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson is in custody in Los Angeles County on murder charges, authorities said Wednesday.

Wilson is accused of shooting and killing a man on June 2, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Antelope Valley Press of Palmdale, Calif. A deputy, Kelly Simon, identified Wilson as a University of Montana football player.

He was being held in Los Angeles County on $1 million bail.

Wilson turned himself in to authorities Tuesday in Lancaster, Calif., which is about an hour northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities say he was involved in an altercation between Kevin Smoot, 29, and a woman who was related to Wilson.

Los Angeles County authorities said Wilson went to Smoot's home on June 2 and shot him. Smoot was shot in the upper torso and later died, police said.

UM Executive Vice President Jim Foley told the AP the school is monitoring the situation.

“It is in the California criminal courts and we will continue to determine the facts over the course of the next few days,” Foley said.

Wilson, whose given name is James Leon Wilson, is a San Diego native who came to Montana right out of high school. The university's football media guide listed Wilson as a junior.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Smoot was shot as he stood in the driveway of his house, sheriff's Deputy Anthony Moore told the AP. The gunman fled the scene.

Investigators later identified Wilson as a suspect, and Wilson surrendered to authorities with his attorney, Moore said. Authorities did not have the name of the attorney.

Smoot's mother, Leslie, said her son had two young children with his 27-year-old girlfriend. She did not know the relationship between Wilson and her son's girlfriend.

She said she learned the news of the arrest Wednesday, the same day she buried her son.

“My heart went out to my son, and for a young man who has just messed up his life,” Leslie Smoot said. “It didn't have to happen that way.”

We're not immune to this stuff either...

Wow...I'm speechless.

I hope this is a confusion and that he didn't do this not that he "gets off" or is found "not guilty" but that he truley DID NOT do this.

However, if he was involved in this or did it, I have no sympathy for him. Stupid people do stupid things and if he was involved or committed this crime then I hope he recieves full punishment.

Again, I hope that he did not do this.

Point of clarification if he did not do this then I am hoping that he is found not guilty or released or whatever. What I was meaning to say simply was that I'm just hoping that he did not do this.

As of now it isn't looking good for Wilson. Usually when a person turns himself in to the authorities it's a pretty good sign that they are guilty of the crime. This is sad news for Jimmy Wilson, his family, the victim, the victim's family and Griznation. This just seems like bad karma kicking us in the butt for all the trash talking some Griz fans have done for the events in Bozeman. We'll have to wait and see what comes of this situation.

Wow... if true, then he just pissed away his life, what a dumbass. Hopefully he didn't have anything to do with it.

I read that Kevin Smoot has 2 kids. Just horrible, the life of their father was taken by a sensless act. Thats what really pisses me off about this regardless if Wilson was involved or not or if the team is or isn't losing a good player.

Yeah, this is definitely not good for the state of Montana. The last thing we need is another state institution and it's California football players giving this place a black eye. Bozeman has had it's share of rough times the last few months because of bad eggs, the last thing we need is another black eye.

"Bad seeds" come from more than California. I refuse to judge someone because of where they're from or, for that matter, by the color of their skin.

You're right, but given the state of Montana State and Montana football, I think we've had plenty of bad seeds from the west coast.

Yeah I know, can't deny the facts with that. However it could've just as easily been Montana kids doing this crap.

Could have.. but thank god, it hasn't been. It's funny.. Montanans are known for being gun toting rednecks who are NRA supporters and f$%,k the dems and their gun laws.. yet, we know not to point them at people. Funny how that works.

I think the only way Wilson can "go free" is if it is a self-defense case.

My condolences to everyone involved, including Griz fans. Cat fans more than anyone can empathize with these kinds of unfortunate events.

Montana CB Wilson in L.A. County jail on murder charges

PALMDALE, Calif. -- University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson is in custody in Los Angeles County on murder charges, authorities said Wednesday.

Wilson is accused of shooting and killing a man on June 2, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Antelope Valley Press of Palmdale, Calif. A deputy, Kelly Simon, identified Wilson as a University of Montana football player.

Wilson was being held in Los Angeles County on $1 million bail.

He turned himself in to authorities Tuesday in Lancaster, Calif., which is about an hour northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities say he was involved in an altercation between Kevin Smoot, 29, and Smoot's girlfriend, who apparently is related to Wilson.

Los Angeles County authorities said Wilson went to Smoot's home on June 2 and shot him. Smoot was shot in the upper torso and later died, police said.

UM Executive Vice President Jim Foley told the AP the school is monitoring the situation.

"It is in the California criminal courts, and we will continue to determine the facts over the course of the next few days," Foley said.

Wilson, whose given name is James Leon Wilson, is a San Diego native who came to Montana right out of high school. Wilson will be a senior this fall.

"My heart went out to my son, and for a young man who has just messed up his life," Leslie Smoot said. "It didn't have to happen that way."

Wilson's arrest was the latest bit of bad news for Montana collegiate football.

On May 18, Montana State football coach Mike Kramer was fired after another of his former players was arrested. Over the past year, five former MSU players and one current MSU player have been arrested on criminal charges, including a murder charge.
