Defense...

Postby Grizo406 on Thu Nov 07, 2002 4:11 am

How about that Griz offense? They have "National Champions" written all over them...they seem to score at will. I'm not the "sharpest knife in the drawer" when it comes to football, but I'm trying to learn, and this board is proving to be a great learning tool. Please forgive my ignorance with the following questions, but what took so long for our defense to show up? Is the "option play" that difficult to adjust to? What if our offense was having the same kind of day our defense started with? I know some of our key players on defense are hurt or out for the season, but I don't understand why a team like Southern Utah can score 45 points on a defense that pretty much invented "The Dead Zone", and a defense that in our first four games, have our opponents run 29 plays inside the Griz 10 yard line for a net of minus 17 yards. I LOVE the Griz, and will support them all the way to Tenn, win or loose, but if any one has answers to the afore mentioned questions, I'd appreciate it, and once again, please excuse my ignorance. GO GRIZ!

the Griz did pretty much score at will this week.
And not to take away from a great performance but SUU's D is
not talented. If the Griz keep rolling like this on offense there will be no way they'll be stopped.
The D does great against conventional offensive schemes, or real vanilla options teams. It seems vs SUU either the scheme wasn't correct or players weren't executing properly. the key to stopping the spread option is staying on your feet.
I watched the Notre Dame-Air Force game last night and ND put on a clinic as to how to stop the triple option. Granted, ND is super fast and more talented than Airforce, but the Griz are equally more talented than SUU. I think between now and the playoffs the coaches will be trying to find tape, and other info on defending the spread triple option.
Our win feels good, but if woulda been playing Georgia southern we woulda got beat.

Georgia Southern's option attack is different from S. Utah's. GSU offensive line doesn't spread out so wide. S. Utah may help a little in preparing for GSU. The fact that Griz did do a good job in second half tells me they can defend it. Plus, having lost the tape from the 1999 game may not have helped. Blame Mick D and the field house remodel on that. Another thing, missing a big hitter like Dave Decoit didn't help. Tyler Thomas filled in OK but certainly wasn't up to Dave Decoit's ability yet.

While it's true GSU doesn't spread their tackle quite as far, their attack is very similar, especially given how the defensive players have similar assignments. More importantly the griz front was getting their legs taken out most of the time. I think they started figuring out how to avoid that as time went on.
In many way's i'm glad that we played SUU as like TrueGriz said, it will help later on. More importantly, I'm glad no Griz were injured by SUU's cheap blocking style. GSU does the same thing and often will roll over on a defenders legs from the side, trying to take the defender out of the game.
