The only reason I ask is there was an article in the Billings Gazette recently about one of the class valedictorian from Billings West.
This kid had a 4.0 GPA in high school and was one of 16 kids in the nation to have a "perfect" ACT score. Perfect as in 36 in all catogories. He also had a bunch of extra curr. activities and community acitivites and he was not accepted to Stanford? He is going to U of M instead.
If a perfect ACT score is not good enough to get in I wonder what is?

1.) a player drenched in the tradition of the university of montana, where her parents both played (her mother for the current coach), and where her father is still the head basketball coach;
2.) a hall-of fame coach in robin selvig, who over 30 years has built one of the best programs in the country;
3.) a tutor/ assistant coach in shannon cate schweyen who is the best player in the history of montana basketball, and with very few exceptions the equal of any player ever produced at stanford;
4.) an annual attendance that is among the best in the country, ranking just a tad fewer than the attendance at stanford;
5.) a basketball facility (dahlberg arena) that is at least the equal of maples pavilion, which was originally built in 1969, and is now one of the smallest arenas in the pac 10;
6.) the friends joslyn has developed over the years playing a.a.u. ball, especially ali hurley, now a freshman at montana;
7. ) the opportunity for her friends and family to see her play on a regular basis;
8.) the absolute slam-dunk guarantee that at montana she will be in the ncaa tournament every year for four years;
9.) finally, the chance joslyn would have to make a major major impact on a school and on a program, versus being yet another good player at a school that has recruited dozens and dozens of high school all-americans.
sure, tara has huge advantages too--the stanford reputation of academic excellence, combined with the promise joslyn can compete against the best players in the country. but even here i feel montana can be competitive, especially since i've done at least as well in life on a fine montana education as my stanfoo-educated brother (sorry, bro), the while it appears selvig, who has always played a tougher schedule than the men, is already upping the ante by scheduling the the marylands of the world.
i do believe it will come down to montana and stanford, and i'm not naive about the advantages tara has in this battle. but it's long been my theory that in any competitive situation, too many fret about the advantages of their competitor while totally forgetting their own unique capabilities, and that's just what i'm seeing played out by montanans in this long long record thread.

Argentina is a wonderful place but there really is no place like home. Go USA!! (Lets hope she remembers that when it comes to who she commits to)![]()
Congrats Jos on this honor.

1 & 2) The pluses on our (Griz fans) side: She's a "homebody", so to speak. And her parents played here.
3) And one thing that will probably determine her decision: How well the mens team does/fathers employment.

If that's what she's basing her decision on, I'm not holding out much hope that she'll be a Lady Griz. Would the Griz admin re-sign Wayne just to get her to sign with the Lady Griz?

YES, not often an all american is in our backyard. Besides Tinkle runs a clean program, recruits well, is learning on the job. I feel the GRIZ will have very good year this year, and Tinkle deserves the opportunity to coach a team with the majority being his own recruits. Hasquet was not his recruit but is tight with Tinkle. As for the other SR, Sharp, he also gets along well and respects Tinkle. If the GRIZ finish in the Top 3 and/or win the BSC tourney, he gets a 3 year extension. If neither happens, then a 1 year extension. The only way he gets let go is if this team is well below .500 in the conference.

citygriz wrote:how stupid can montana be? tinkle is a rising star in the coaching ranks, a great representative of the university, arguably the best recruiter we've seen here in years. i'd sign him to a three-year extension right now, and renew it every year. then when the big schools come calling, we'll either have won his favor to stay put, or be in a position to get a nice buyout. if tinkle were a stock, he'd be starbucks '93; a politician, obama '02.
a word to our a.d.: you have to know the future to make history, and this is a great chance for you to take a little short-term heat from the hysterical chicken-littles in return for a much bigger long-term payoff, and a large share of the credit.
