echoes of the mike lewis recruitment in the 60's. back then, the a.c.c. and the s.e.c. were still segregated, making it imperative that those schools get the best white talent, and lewis was the top-rated high school post player in the country. lewis visited kentucky and ucla, and the rumor was he still wanted to stay home and play with his high school teammates, most notably, greg hanson. but when duke came calling with their ace recruiter, bucky waters, it was the end of montana's hopes.

at that time, montana had just "de-emphasized" athletics, we'd lost our affiliation with the old skyline conference, and the basketball program was in disarray. if joslyn stays home, she'll step into a well-respected national program with one of the best coaching staffs she'll find anywhere. if she wants to see the world, meet new people and experience different cultures, her basketball talent will be a passport to a wider world, either as a collegian or as a pro. if she does decide on a bigger school, i can tell her this: she'll never get montana out of her system.

oh, by the way, i have two nephews of college age. both visited to inspect bay area campuses. both liked cal over stanford--despite all those beautiful palms, despite the fact their dad is a cardinal. both wound up at home, at oregon. neither is a jock, or they'd both be at montana.

Yes, I'm serious with this. There is precedent of girls playing male sports at the collegiate level.

NO!

Gonzaga football, undefeated since 1942!

You care to explain why, Lou?

Or are you just a typical male chauvinist?

Uh No. I assume your kidding. She is a great player but saying she could play D1 mens ball is just rediculous. The UM men would easily beat the No. 1 womens team in the country to put it in perspective.

Hopefully she plays for Selvig though, that would be huge get.

That's an understatement ... I'm pretty sure the Sentinel boys could beat the top women's college team in the country.

Lets not get carried away here.

I think that's a little unfair. Lou doesn't have any biases against anybody.

SH,

Crazy doesn't even do justice to the idea of Joslyn suiting up for her dad.

BTW, who is the wide receiver in your avatar with the fantastic mullet?

She's not a receiver, sake. She's the first girl ever to score in a D-I game, at Jacksonville State. The name's Ashley Martin, and she was a kicker.

Oh, yes. Because it's a MEN'S TEAM! That's why Women have thier very own team.

Of course, you may have a point. I guess you'd support Cameron Rundles playing for the women's tean then. Or are you a typical feminist who wants to play with the boys but have the door held open for her at night?

Back in the Day there was a small asphalt basketball court south of Miller Hall. When the weather warmed up it was non-stop pickup ball out there. You got to keep playing as long as you kept winning.

I used to see Shannon Cate out there for hours at a time, always on the court, never waiting to play.

Off topic, but the court is gone???... spent a lot of time out there when I was staying in Miller "the high life of living" Hall back in '80-81!

1. Invoking one's TEAM biases is a red herring when the topic at hand is the success of an individual PLAYER. I'm sure that one could pit a HS boys' all-star team against the worst women's college basketball team and win, but that avoids the question of whether or not Tinkle would do well against BSC men AT HER POSITION. (Again, nobody's asking a guard to play center here.)

2. The very idea of a HS boys team beating the likes of Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, and Tara Vanderveer is ludicrous at best and sexist at worst. I'd like to see those mere BOYS try to stop Candace Parker. Not going to happen.

Hornet, Tennesee might have a chance against the North Star Knight's boys team, but they wouldn't touch a decent high school team. Kevin Love and OJ Mayo are one year removed from high school, but I am inclined to believe that they would have done okay against Candace Parker last year. What are you smoking? At UM, there were a couple of fantastic women's basketball players that played in the WNBA and would play pick up ball in the rec annex. They could hold their own, but were not dominating the court against hungover, Pizza Pipline eating guys.

To me it is obvious that Wayne and Lisa have done an excellent job with their kids. I was home for Christmas and was wandering around the mall. As a junior in high school Joselyn is a celebrity and watched her wander the mall and deal with all the people who came up and talked to her. She seemed to handle it quite well.

I imagine over the next year it is going to become increasingly difficult for her because of the expections involved. Believe me, I would love for her to play for the lady griz, but as maybe the best basketball player to come out of montana in some time, I would completely understand if she wants to explore other places.

I get excited thinking about her and Ali Hurley playing at the UofM together, because of what it could do for our program in the future. Not that Robin hasn't had great recruiting years the past few years, this is the type of deal that could move the UofM in to the national spotlight again.

As I said before, she'll make the decision to go to whatever school she wants for all the right reasons. Best of luck to her. Sure seems like she is a class kid. Class family too.

Lets not forget what landing Butte Soph Lexie Nelson would add to the Lady Griz with Tinkle and Hurley. Nelson was 1st team All State as a Freshman last season, and didn't she lead the state in scoring? This season, she is scoring again and is currently leading her team to an undefeated season.

I caught the Butte High vs Butte Central games (both girls and boys) at the Civic Center this past Thursday and Butte High has the most athletic high school girls point guard I have ever seen. She is fast with the ball and a great passer! Her last name is McClosky (sp?), and I don't know what year she is, either a Senior or Junior, but all I can remember saying about her while watching is man she is good.

I am like everyone else, I am praying Tinkle chooses Montana! That would be AWESOME. She is one of us, she belongs at Montana. But whatever she choses, I will support her.

GO GRIZ
