would play pick up ball in the rec annex. They could hold their own, but were not dominating the court against hungover, Pizza Pipline eating guys.
That's an interesting observation. But really, haven't the Tennessee and some other college women's bb team been doing exactly that the last couple or so years? Been holding practises against an all-male team? I remember playing in some pickup games in the rec annex a while back when I was on the opposite side going up against a team that had a Jeanne McNulty and a Shari Thesenvitz. [Of couse, there was a Derrick Pope as well, but, I mean, really guys; against a bunch of hungover hyperboles?]
Those hungover, Pizza Pipline eating son of a chauvinistic pig lowlifes couldn't do diddley shit!!!!
Yeah sure, if you're dirt and play like it, you'll probably win. For what it's worth. Something to pound your chest over, I guess. Big Deal. I'am not impressed.
Drop names like Kevin Love and O. J. Mayo. Oh, they're just some kind of players that were on some so-called 'decent' high school team one year removed. I see.
Yeah, I keep forgetting, Montana has some decent high school teams that complete on a national level every year. Yeah, right. Interesting comparison, there. nice reach there for an adequate put-down mr. bobby riggs. Couldn't do much better myself, I dear say. When you can't beat up on the guys anymore beat up on the chicks I guess.
Next you can say that Wilt Chamberlain would beat the shit out of a Lisa Leslie any day of the week. Who knows, you may be right. for what it's worth lowlife.
So get your couple six packs and guzzle it down. Pass out and wake up in the gutter; seems to be some type of puberty rite of passage around these here parts.
several summers ago during an off-olympic year, i watched our u.s. women's team play a men's ymca team in palo alto. the women featured dawn staley at point guard and lisa leslie at center, plus the tall burge twins among several other women stars, and this was to be their last tuneup before playing in the pan-american games. the ymca team was all white guys, the tallest 6'2", nobody i'd ever heard of, and they obviously had been told, best behavior, no rough stuff, gentlmen at all times--which they were. it was a joy to watch the sportsmanship in that contest.
and?
the men won by 20, and probably could have won by 40. the women were better in the open court, but the men were much stronger and quicker to the ball, and easily controlled the boards, even though they gave up a lot of height.
i remain a huge fan of the women's game, but only when women compete against women. an average but well-coached high school team that played above the rim would have little trouble against a stellar women's college team, candace parker included, it's just one of dem der biological facts of life.
There was an article in Sports Illustrated a few years ago about the Tennesee women's team. Pat Summit had a sign up for guys to play against them. From the people who signed up, they put together what was termed a "decent" intramural team.
The guys team won every scrimmage. She said it was a valuable learning experience for the women, and made them tougher for tournament play, but discontinued the practice.
Just don't play a game of H O R S E with Shannon, Mandy, or Sonya and you will be OK.
Which ball? If you've ever shot with a women's ball, you'll agree that this makes a huge difference. We used to use a ball that was BIGGER than a man's ball by the same amount that a women's ball is SMALLER for rebounding drills; significantly fewer shots went in.

WGF
Chamberlain has been dead since '99 so he probably wouldn't beat the shit out of Lisa Leslie. Speaking of dropping names, I am also very impressed that you shared the court with Pope, McNulty and Thesenovitz at the rec annex. It is very unusual for Griz athletes to play basketball there, that is a memory to be cherished.
Here is the simple fact, there is a large gap in athletic talent between mens' and womens' basketball. This is not chauvinistic, just fact.
Please excuse me, my fellow chauvinistic lowlifes and I are on our way to drink a 30 pack of Hamms and protest an opening of Curves. I hope that a street sweeper doesn't mow us down after passing out in the gutter.
GB, I agree with the HORSE statement. You could probably include Fuzesy from Carroll in that group as is poised to break a national record for mens' and womens' 3pt %.
WOW!!!!!!!!!! To say Stanford is the jewel of the West Coast is to trumpet an ignorance only Stanford or Stanford wannabe would exhibit...Cal Tech, Cal Poly, USC, UCLA, UCSD, and a host of exclusive smaller institutions like Occidental, Harvey Mudd, Pomona, etc would match and probably humble The Farm....
Trust me, because Stanford is a pragmatic philsophical approach to education, it is not the best in the West...it does have great publicists....
I hope the Tinkle girl does what she thinks best...I wish Montana had more to offer but, UM is an average state institution with an exceptional locale, and exceptional alumni base. Frankly, I remember the witch hunt against Leslie Fiedler in the 60s and while most of UM is socially liberal and liberalized, the Big Sky country has a long way to go in that regard. Good luck to her....she is as admirable as her father.....the apple never falls far....
yo, lagriz67, way back when in a different era on another board you recommended a favorite restaurant in my cool grey city of love, and while i have a vague idea of its location, i do not remember its name, an annoyance that has festered for years. can you now spare this one thin dime of information?

I think GB1 meant the crown jewel as far as the all-elusive athletic/academic combo index. Last I checked, the Clairemonts didn't play too many games on ESPN. Same with Cal Tech. UCLA; Berkeley aren't far off, but not quite there in [layperson perception] academics.
If most people think Stanford is the best in the west (including many employers and USN&WR), and no employer would ever scoff at the degree, and it still has a great WBB program, it is the crown jewel of the west. No debate.
Hey Citygriz...I believe it was the Plush Room at the York on Sutter St...it is no longer the hot jazzy place it was, but has made some new changes...the cabaret is gone...
As for the Stanford is best crowd..obviously, they are either affilitated with the Farm or wannabe...trust me, in Socal..a degree from UCLA or USC is far more meaninful..and the last I heard, it is UCLA that has won 100 NCAA championships, has over 15 Nobel Prize winners, the very highest rating on medical schools, and, it is UC Berkeley that has Boalt Hall (?) THE law school of the West...Stanford has a huge 32 billion endowment and never stops asking...trust me....I can gladly forward the solicitations to anyone who thinks Stanford is the cat's meow...Still, I hope the Tinkle girl has the sense her father and mother gave her and makes the decisions SHE wants...including NOT playing if that is what she wants...

Oh, I thought we were done.....
A) Maybe, but surely only in SoCal is a UCLA or University ofSecondChoice degree more meaningful.
B) Overall university rankings:
1. Princeton University (NJ)
2. Harvard University (MA)
3. Yale University(CT)
4. Stanford University(CA)
5. University of Pennsylvania

8. Duke University(NC)
9. Columbia University(NY)
9. University of Chicago
11. Dartmouth College(NH)
12. Washington University in St. Louis
12. Cornell University(NY)
14. Brown University(RI)
14. Northwestern University(IL)
14. Johns Hopkins University(MD)

1Yale University (CT)
2Stanford University (CA)
2Harvard University (MA)
4New York University
5Columbia University (NY)
6University of Chicago
6University of Pennsylvania
8University of California–Berkeley

Never has Stanford been ranked outside of the top three. Conversely, there have been years where Boalt (now called UC Berkeley School of Law) has been renked outside of the top 10. My source for both rankings is USN&WR (the only one anyone pays attention to.)
D) UCLA, while great in many sports, cannot touch Stanford in women's basketball. Which is, of course, the only sport that is relevant in this discussion.
E) All of this is not to say that these other universities are bad. They are not. LAGriz simply needs to do a bit of research before making his opinion into fact on this board. Of course, nobody really knows which university is the best. But one can make the best case for Stanford out west due to the existence of numerous rankings.
No, Now we're done.
PS- I'm glad that a UCLA degree is better in SoCal. I hope that transfers to law degrees too. I'm going to UCLA law, and they even admit that they are dominated by Stanford grads if they both want the same job. Sure, UCLA dominates almost any other school for SoCal jobs, but stanford is an exception. I'll be sure to tell Career Serrvices that they are wrong and LAGriz is right.
It's amazing how far off track this thread has progressed. One point to consider about Tinkle's possible career at Standford: they are a damn good school, with a great women's basketball program. The merits of their academics can be argued ad naseum, but they are still a good school, who also have already won 6 Pac-10 titles this decade.

Thank you grizband. This is why GB1 made the crown jewel comment, Stanford has the absolute best blend of academics and WBB. It's not very debatable. It's like if Yale were in the ACC and always contended for the ACC title.
Uh, Citygriz...that would be the Former Plush Room...and this thread was about provincialism as near as I can make out...as a Stanford grad I am impressed with the love from the great frozen north...
well, my artist wife is a guest lecturer at stanford, and she's on the side of the frozen north. says the students there are extraordinary, the resources and access to talent, especially in the high tech area, unbelievable. i don't see academically how you can mention usc and stanford in the same breath the way you might, say, argh! and cambridge.
Well Citygriz...I look at college "rankings" as more rank than anything else....sorta like the rankings of the Griz this year....the reality is quite different...I like USC much better than Stanford...for athletics and academics...Stanford and SC are more trade school than University...pragmatic, money making machines...but, while Stanford strives to be "the Harvard of the West", USC just plugs along, working the alumni, gathering honors, and going into a different realm than the high tech area that avoids so much more...As for bball...I am afraid, this is yet another year where Griz faithful mutter "wait till next year"....hell, I have been doing that for over 35 years....eventually, that great year will come around...until then, I write checks, go to games when the Griz are in Socal, and make the occasional trip to the Farm with friends....happened to catch the Santa Clara game....very disappointed...I thought the Griz would take that one....alas...wait till next year....

Depends on the major if you want to compare Stanford and USC. USC and Stanford are very highly rated, top 10, in engineering for example. Pick the one based on where you feel the most comfortable as they are both damn good.
USC is really climbing the rankings and attracting academic talent. Your thoughts don't apply to the USC of today. 15 - 20 years ago I would have agreed with you.
I like my plan best. Joslyn stays home and becomes a Lady Griz, helps Selvig move the program into the top 25 and accompanying NCAA wins, gets her undergraduate degree from UM. Then, after a nice WNBA career, decides to get a Masters at Stanford.
