Academics aside, lets see. Go to Stanford and consistently be a 1-4 seed in the tourney or come to Montana and get beat by 28 by the #3 team from the SEC? I wonder.......
Or come to Montana and get beat by only 4 points to a team that isn't in the SEC (e.g. 2004).

Which is a good point. I would think she would expect the LG to commit to bringing in some REAL talent alongside her. Not a shot at the kids we have now, just a realistic observation...

With the national and regional competition she plays against in AAU ball, I am sure her alone could draw interest of a few higher caliber players than the LG do now. (1) Get playing time with a team that is most often in the Big Dance. (2) Be part of setting the bar higher and taking it new heights never seen before. (3) A fabulous 2 to 4 in the top 7 rotation as True Freshman, verses riding the bench or redshirting at a power conference school.
The point is, regardless of school, one big commit can have a domino effect of All Americans wanting to play together, and a challenge to do something no other group of recruits have ever done before. Honestly, What more could a group of recruits do at Stanford, UConn, TN, Duke, MD, NC, (etc, insert your program here).
Combining that talent with our fan support and a legendary coach, I think we could put ourself in the running for elite players with Tinkle's commitment.

I guess I was thinking more recent. With the high hopes people have had for this group of ladies, a 28 point loss to a 3rd team (yes it was an SEC team) has to be a little point of concern for her as she looks to play ball for a school. A good showing against Vandy could have been a sign that her presence would have pushed the Griz over the top, not pushing the train back up the hill.
If you don't think very good, Don't think very much!!

I hope that is exactly what her mom and dad are telling her......

I'd like to see her stay and become more legendary than she already is and I'm not saying she doesn't have the potential to do that where ever she ends up going but, it would be nice to see it Missoula.

Which is one thing that I've never seen in women's basketball in nearly thirty years. For the most part, I've never seen one that was a four or five star rated player that wouldn't rather take the invite to play at one of the bigger programs, Stanford, Tennessee, Connecticut, etc., rather than bother with a smaller school/program and try and turn it around. Sure, some may say S. Cate may have did so, but, then again who was recruiting her?...I mainly heard either Hawaii or Kentucky. Not that big of a program to begin with there.
It seems as if most girls would rather hide anonymously in a big program than shine openly in a smaller one. Maybe it's a safety factor considering the number of wierdos out there. It was but a couple years ago that some excellent girl's soccer player had her body found in some trash dumpster in some back alley. One can't really think Missoula is all that much safer than Palo Alto.

History indicates you are right. However, at some point a smaller program makes its marks and gets the break or breaks it is looking for in any major sport. Look at the impact small and midmajors are making in mens basketball every year. 10 to 15 years ago, basketball experts and fans were saying the same thing about Gonzaga. How wrong do they look now? Memphis is a midmajor, yet argueably have one of the top 5 programs in the nation. La Tech and Old Dominion are small schools yet have storied histories in womens basketball. Histories better than most Major programs.
Granted it is harder for a non majors program to do it, but it can be done. Granted, when it does happen the success is harder to sustain over a long period. With that said though, the LG have a coach that set his terms as to when to leave. He will retire from the GRIZ. His replacement is committed, and no signs of her leaving (CATE) anytime soon. I think the LG are in position to do this with Tinkle's commit. We have factors working for us that other non major programs do not have. If a program can do it, the Lady GRIZ can. They certainly are in position to do it.
Come on Jocelyn, you cannot get rid of the blood in you. That means the LG are your destination.

I was accepted at Stanford ... and my daughter at Cal Tech, with scholarship offers. We didn't go, because California was not, after visiting, where we wanted to be. Could that happen with Ms. Tinkle too?
Cognitive dissonance is the theory that when you "feel off balance to a marginal degree" you learn the most. Any person who leaves their comfort zone, whether it be towns/cities, states, jobs, or social circles, knows exactly what this feels like. It is also refered to as culture shock. But after you've given yourself the chance to adapt to the new situation, it all seems normal again, but you know so much more....
Now, after being exposed to a whole new situation, your knowledge base grows significantly. This is where true human learning takes place. She has a great opportunity to expand her knowledge and self awareness. Of course you will feel odd, when you travel to a foreign campus, be around other people for 2 days, but this should be embraced. Isn't that the college experience?
She's experienced Missoula and zoo town. Go check out another part of the world, expand who you are and who you will become to the fullest. She can always return to zoo city and comfort.
This is what Missoula was for me and many others, a great weird place that felt like home after some time.. She should experience another part of the country, another type of lifestyle, leave the nest, in the name of learning and knowledge.
What the...... Wyo..fan? Are you a psycho? Or maybe just need to change your meds? Bodies in trash cans? This is a sports forum. Yeah there is a real world, but that is over the top.

Beastie your post is 100% true and one we all can relate to. (Well that might be me overestimating a few egrizzers). Some of us, me included pursued exploring other places after my college days. Did I or could have I explored right out of highschool? YES, I had other opportunities, but in my late teens, early 20's I was not ready to be that much on my own that far from home. Most kids with good community support and a tight family weigh that heavily in making the decisions they make.
Nobody here can argue regarding how tight the Tinkle family is, or what the community support they have in Missoula. Joselyn is an ELITE talent with grades to boot. She has been priveledged enough in family finances and talent to see most of the United States and the world. She has already spent 3 days to 2 weeks in many areas of the United States. She already has seen these places long enough to narrow her choices down easier and quicker than your average teenager and/or athlete. She will see more places this summer while playing AAU ball. Chances are very likely she has her choices limited down to 4-6 schools already.
I will be very surprised if she chooses any program more than 1500 miles from home. That alone, eliminates some contenders. The only way I see her going far away from here is if a major program offers her father better salary as a top assistant in Mens Basketball. Then again, not sure if that would help much due to (1)the Tinkles' being very happy in Montana. (2)Finances are not an issue, his family banked alot of $$$ when he played overseas. (3) I know Wayne well enough to think, his family has too much pride to be used as pawn in the recruiting game. (4) Wayne strikes me as another Robin Selvig as for being at Montana at least until his kids are finished with school. He is smart enough and will better himself as a coach here. With improvement in the areas he knows he has to work on, he will be here at least another 10 years if the improvement happens. Which I believe will happen.
For any other top recruit, I would rate us with less than a 5% chance of landing. With all the inherit advantages the LG have with her, I would say the LG are 50/50 at worse to land her as things stand now. IF she goes anywhere other than Montana it will be within 1500 miles of here.
FWIW, I am sure Ali Hurley may have asked JT the chances of her committing to the LG to help in her own decision. I am thinking she heard some very favorable things regarding the LG. Hell outside of family, close friends, and the GRIZ, Ali may know more than anyone on JT's decision she will be making.
With that said, I wish Joselyn the best of luck regardless of her decision.

How can you tell? Yeah there is a real world....just keep on ignoring it all by an act of the will. Good cover up. For those just born yesterday. Yes, this is a sports forum. What do you care?
Since when does a person that speaks of the fact there are wierdos around happenstantially become a 'psycho?'...as you ask. Every day at work I meet guys that are either FBI Special Agents, U.S. Marshals Officers and Federal Judges. Are they 'psychos' too? Get a grip. Your putdown was really uncalled for. I'd much rather deal with all pertinent factors that way into a person making a decision. Whatever they are.
Think the world will go away if you hide under your bed all the time? Women have more to lose than you have to risk. Think about it.

Can I ask you guys a favor? Please do not expand upon where this great thread is about to lead. I hate when any thread gets shutdown, especially when we are talking about a local talent that has worked hard to even be mentioned in this kind of thread.
Thanks in advance.

excellent post from the master of cognitive insolence but i've been struck recently by a line from one of my fave writers, wallace stegner, who grew up in the west, loved the west, and always felt his life was a bit askew whenever he got away from the west--even when one of those places was harvard. the line is, if you don't know where you are you don't know who you are. my youthful curiosity led me once for a year to a city in the south where i suffered exactly this feeling, so cynical of the local traditions and so at odds with the thinking (if you could call it that) of the resident racists that i regret to this day my stupidity in staying any more than 24 hours. my brother and sister too left their home state for out-of-state educations but both returned and have led happy productive lives miles from where they began those lives. i'm big on experience--experience precedes essence, what is life but our experience of it--but i'm also big on pleasure, on being in surroundings that give me comfort and resonate with my beliefs, hobbies and outlook on life, and in this i must say, montana is a wonderful place, and one will waste a lot of time in life trying to find better.

I wouldn't really worry too much about this thread being shutdown, 'mtgrizrule.' Besides, I should have remembered that the paths of violence and student/athletes never have crossed ever, ever before and most likely never will. That even out-of-the-way-places like Pocatello violence wouldn't and couldn't serve as a reason to leave a basketball program and subsequently curtail a career either. But a close estimate I may or may not of heard of. What?..."Rumor Mill?" Perhaps. Even if she did spend her high school career in Missoula as well.
Another besides, if there's any consistency, it shouldn't be shut down since there seems to be a running poker game over on "Montana Grizzlies Football and the FCS," instead of say, "The Sports Forum" and everyone is juicing it up and telling their live's stories with drunken episodes and tickets over in the 'sports forum' known as "Another Giz Football Arrest," going on six pages now with about 102 replies. Right up your sports alley there, football fans. Nothing but football there, D-U-D-E. Good for the Goose, is good for the Gander, I always say. No sense in being hypocritical, you know. That's just deceit upon your head like a death warrant.
Cognitive dissonance is the theory that when you "feel off balance to a marginal degree" you learn the most...
You need to brush up on your theories, or stop using big words you don't really understand.
He's almost correct. The theory of cognitive dissonance (not cognitive dissonance alone) is what he meant, I think. One doesn't necessarily learn the most....just develops new ideas to reconcile the dissonance. It might be developing a justification for drunk driving after one gets a DUI; so not always positive....
Carry on. Joslyn Tinkle and All Americans and rabble rabble....
