For those who missed it Oregon State fired Jay John as their head coach a few day's back. The Athletic director has said that he will start his search immediately for a new coach. One of the candidates that he has talked about being very interested in is former Griz Coach Blaine Taylor. Others who have been mentioned in the news as possible candidates are Randy Bennett of Saint Mary’s College, Mark Fox of Nevada and former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery, (also a former Griz coach) though the chances of OSU landing Montgomery seem remote.

I think Blaine would be a good choice. Every time I've met him, he seems to be a great guy who knows a lot about hoops. I don't think he got a fair shake with the Griz, but that's just my opinion.
Gonzaga football, undefeated since 1942!
People who think they know it all are especially annoying to those of us who do.

I think Blaine would be a great choice. He took over a dormant ODU program and did a great job there. He had some personal issues when he left UM, but has done a great job in that regard as well. OSU would be a great fit imo.
he's a nice guy. he and larry eustachy (sp) got the same unfair shake. I wish I had a dollar for everyone I know who have made poor judgement under the influence.

Both of them landed on the feet. In a strange sort of way, the DUI's may have been a good thing for both of them in the long run. They have both quit drinking as a result, and are doing well, on and off the court.
I have not followed Larry where is he. I agree with you entirely about Taylor. He was the coach when I was there, I worked out for him when I tried to walk on.

Eustachy is the HC at Southern Mississippi, but took an indefinite leave of absence to be with his ailing mother.
Blaine's name is certainly in the mix.

"I'm sure Monty's name will come up because it always does," said John Akers, the editor of Basketball Times magazine and a former sportswriter (1984-2000) at the San Jose Mercury-News who covered Stanford and the Pac-10. "But Monty doesn't get any joy out of recruiting, he doesn't relish that aspect the way (USC coach) Tim Floyd does," and he's quite content living in the Bay Area. It's highly unlikely he'd be lured out of coaching retirement to take on the massive rebuilding job at OSU. Akers said OSU might consider Blaine Taylor of Old Dominion, who played and coached for Montgomery at Montana before Montgomery left Missoula for Stanford. "Blaine was approached a year ago by Utah but he felt at the time his job was as good as what he was being offered.[6] Akers said OSU's drawbacks and recent losing history will scare some candidates off, but others will be attracted by the lure of a Pac-10 job and the chance to establish or burnish a reputation. "Certainly coaches have egos and everyone thinks they can be the one who can defy the odds and be the guy who can bring players to Corvallis," he said
I agree Taylor would be a great coach in the Pac 10. His current school has done nothing but win since he arrived.
Now this is a guy with some fire in the belly, which transfers to his team and their energy level!!!. That would be a good job for him and I bet he can recruit.
Travis Dequire is his first assistant. I bet he would bring Travis, who is from Seattle.

Take the following for what it's worth.
I finished graduate school and moved away from Missoula in 1991. For a couple years I drove back and caught an occasional game. Then nothing until one trip to Missoula in the mid to late 90s when Blaine was the head coach there. I found it a very depressing change from the last game I saw in the early 90s. Small, apathetic crowd. Gangly players who needed to hit the weights. And a ton of punitive substitutions for missed shots, double dribbles, etc. I thought the guys looked dazed and confused and I was disturbed to see that at a home game.
He has apparently been doing well at ODU so maybe he's different now. My hat is off to him if that is the case.
I heard Blaine is Lute's replacement in a year or two.
Nope. Lute's replacement is the interim HC right now.
Not what I heard
Lot's of things could happen between now and then, but if Blaine were to go to OSU, not sure he would then bolt for Arizona. If he has the option, he would be brain dead not to wait for AZ to open.
The way the Bucks are playing, Larry K. may be available, too!
Larry K will get time because the owner likes him. Unless you really screw up (Sacramento Kings Coach Musselman DUI after 1 win) then you are going to get 3 years.
speaking of krysko, good story in usa today a few days ago about the bucks franchise--a smaller market team with little glam, no telvision (the bucks get one appearance on national tv this year), and little margin for error on draft choices. i couldn't help thinking, the bucks are to the nba what the griz are to the ncaa. krysko is well-liked by the owners and a fixture in milwaukee but where big-money is at stake, patience is short. managing egos is crucial, as in making sure bogut gets his touches, while keeping michael redd happy, and i don't know that krysko has found the right formula yet, or whether he yet has the overall talent he needs. he may have three years as long as there's steady progress, but this can't have been the start management--or krysko--hoped for.

Griz BB during Taylor's last year here was pretty crappy. I did not like the way he treated the players and the punitive substitutions seemed more likely to go to non-Montanan players. I suspect he has learned much in the years since, and is a much better coach. If he still engaged in many of the antics I saw, he would not be as successful as he has become.

Kevin O'Neill was brought to Arizona to be Lute's replacement. He has Arizona ties and was very successful under Lute while at UA. And the team is finally responding to him. They are much like the Griz in that they have several losses that were close and two in overtime. But they beat WSU this week and crushed UW today. This is a team that is very streaky and could be a team to be reckoned with in the PAC 10 tourney, as a middle seed.
I am going to be down in Tucson at the end of February and am taking my wife to a U of A/USC game. Last year I got to see UCLA crush the cats and I am hoping for a reversal of fortune this year for my visit. Regardless, I am as big a Cat fan in Montana as there is. And I think Kevin would be a good selection to replace Lute. It will be interesting to see what the attitude in Arizona is on him.

Looks like Lute changed his mind.
In first meeting with media, Olson says O'Neill won't remain on Arizona staffAssociated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona's Lute Olson said he had his players' interests in mind when he took a personal leave of absence last season.
"The reason that I took the leave was that I didn't feel that I could be fair to the kids," Olson said. "And despite what maybe some of you think, the main thing that I have, in my 50 or 51 years [in coaching], has been the concern of the kids."
Beyond that, a combative Olson declined to discuss the reasons behind his leave during a televised 48-minute news conference at McKale Center on Tuesday.
Olson also said assistant coach Kevin O'Neill will not remain on his staff, although O'Neill said last week he planned to honor the second year of a two-year commitment he made to the program. O'Neill led the Wildcats for the season and had been named as Olson's successor when he retires.
"When he said he's coming back, or that he's going to fulfill the terms of his contract, he won't be on the staff," Olson said.
Olson announced that he was going on leave Nov. 4, and one month later he said he was extending it through the season -- on the same day he filed for divorce from his wife, Christine.
"Frankly, even though I realize I'm a public figure, I don't think I need to go into every nuance of my private life," the 73-year-old Olson said. "There were things going on in my life that did create some health issues that I needed time to address. But it was not a health scare."
