Ronbo's point is operative. Even if he's aquitted of the murder rap via self-defense, the other charges make his walking unlikely. If the evidence on the murder rap is weakening (hopefully), I'd guess there'd be a plea offer. So he's likely to be occupied in CA for some time in any case.
LA county and Lancaster/Palmdale are not where a young black man is going to expect to be able to get the most fair treatment from law enforcement. Leaving and surrendering after having time to consult with competent legal advisors seems to be a wise choice.
A 20 year old suspected gangbanger is not going to be questioned the same way as a well represented young college student.
We can be sure that the case would have a different outcome if JW had waited around for the local police to jump to conclusions and coerce a statement.
Jimmy now has one of the best attorneys in LA and reports are coming back in his favor.
After dealing with the immediate charges there can be no others. If JW didn't commit a crime he didn't commit a crime by leaving. Most people flee crime scenes...If not, there would be more innocent bystanders injured.

I have seen more times than not where some punk kid steps up to one of the football players to try and prove himself and then after he gets his head stomped they call the player a bad person or a jerk.

I call BS on your alleged eyewitness account.
Detective Baker MPD reviewed the tapes from the bar. McGillis initiated contact with Hawthorne and got knocked out. McGillis was the aggressor. Alex was accused of putting the boot to McGillis and may have but that's what happens in real fights.
MPD acknowledged that the aggressors could be charged but contacted all involved and asked to let the issue drop.

This site is so littered with asshole's that want to be the final say on everything regardless of facts!! its destroying the healthy debates that have made EGriz a fun site to visit..... Its unreal, it was jacks fault he was assulted? its Smoot's fault he got his head blown off?? granted he was abusive to a woman which is horrible...but does it justify murder??.... and i'm sure its the people's fault that got robbed......unreal, i mean give me a break people. Say what u want but i'm done posting on this subject, its my fault for not realizing the people i would be dealing with.....This is a dead issue. I encourage everyone to get on a positive subject....like our upcoming season, the new stadium addition and our first round playoff game in Basketball.....

I don't believe JW was a choir boy at all but very few discuss the nonsense the out of town players are subjected to by many of the locals. JW did have a conflict with a local guy over a girl but nothing came of it.
The players are targets whenever they are in public. There are many good fans in Missoula but there are also many who resent the attention given to the outsiders and make it a point to antagonize the out of state players.
As far as the McGillis case goes. McGillis was the aggressor and he had no choice in dropping the matter. It is a fact that Hawthorne was asked not to press charges. The facts on the McGillis case can be confirmed easily. Guy Baker was the detective on the case. The Hawthorne family made it clear to all involved that if Alex continued to be slandered that there would be civil action.

The case was fully investigated. Missoula PD reviewed the video evidence. The players were fully exonerated. Hawthorne was proven to have been assaulted.

From his posts, it looks like he was a friend of McGillis, was probably there and involved, probably played high hoops in Missoula, and is one of several posters who have consistently dissed and said untrue things about Wilson on the board. Even now, it looks like he's still saying untrue things about the incident. Jeez Baller, feel free to support your friend, but please don't make up stuff. mrjones is presumably connected to Wilson, but at least his information appears to be accurate (and if my memory serves me, has appeared accurate all along).
