Wow. I thought getting out of Helena was a step up. Come to find out I've been living in an armpit for 11 years and didn't even know it. I must be blind.
The most telling sign of Great Falls' status among the other Montana cities is this, you will almost never hear a person who has moved away from Great Falls mention any intention of moving back.
The only reason anyone would ever move back to Great Falls is because they couldn't hack it somewhere with a competitive workforce and GF is the only place they could find some tiny iota of success.
That isn't to say that there aren't plenty 3-4-5 generation GFers doing a fine job for themselves and the town. It's just that once you leave, there is virtually no rational reason why anyone would go back.
Name one business success story in GF in the last 25 years that wasn't a casino or a car lot.
I don't want to think of how much more of a $hithole that place will be after the base closes.
I grew up in Helena my entire youth and then joined the Air Force to see the world. They stationed me 87 miles up the road in Great Falls for 8 years. I used to think that Butte was the ugliest town in Montana when I was young until I lived in GF. I really can't put my finger on it but it seemed to me that besides the military there was no middle class. You either had your Pierces or your lower class. And it showed through.
He just finished his latest expansion and has set up a commercial Wholesale coffee roasting facility that can roast probably about 5,000 ++lbs per day. - That's 2 Million lbs a year- that's pretty much big time or as you called it "a Great Falls success story"

This thread reminds me of a conversation I had at the Bonnie Raitt concert in Missoula several years ago with a lady from Billings who thought she was in a position to offer condolences for my living in Great Falls. I would hate to think I have more in common with greatfallscat than you two, but I guess it is what it is. Since you have made up your minds, be sure to share your opinion with any Californians you know who are looking at moving to Montana. They have always gravitated toward Missoula and the new subdivisions around Belgrade and I would like to keep it that way.

D.A. Davidson. BusinessWeek's website says "D.A. Davidson & Co. was founded in 1935 and is headquartered in Great Falls, Montana with additional offices in California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The company operates as a subsidiary of Davidson Companies." I think being a Montana-based broker-dealer with satellite offices as far away as Florida pretty much qualifies as a "business success story."
Next time I run into Ian I will be sure to ask him if he stayed here because he was afraid he couldn't "hack it somewhere with a competitive workforce." I will tell him there are a couple of geniuses on eGriz who want to know. Hope that doesn't cause him to reconsider the series of very generous donations he and Nancy have made to the UM Foundation.

That isn't to say that there aren't plenty 3-4-5 generation GFers doing a fine job for themselves and the town. It's just that once you leave, there is virtually no rational reason why anyone would go back.

I'll bet Great Falls does seem nice compared to the rez.
Let me guess, you visit during the fair? Or is it the basketball tournaments? Just kidding.
Unfortunately compared with just about anywhere else besides an indian reservation, GF is a pretty big dump.

Considering that I'm a banker that grew up in Great Falls, I'm pretty sure I heard of DADCO (or whatever it is that they're calling themselves now) before.
Let's see here, do I want to work my ass off as an ibanker and spend what little free time I do have in NYC, San Fran, Chicago or GREAT FALLS?
For God's sake, the only attractive single women over the age of 19 in that town have at least one bastard kid and a scorching case of herp.

I don't usually stoop this low, but let me make an exception.
I know three kinds of bankers,
spineless, clueless and bagless.
Which one are you?
You also forgot to mention the
town you now call home?
I only know three kinds of people that would say something as douche as you just did and they're all on meth.
Also, I don't live in Poplar or Rocky Boy, I live in Chicago so good luck having your cousins track me or whatever it was that you were insinuating you were going to do.
Of course all of this reminds me of one other really annoying part of Great Falls...........
Change the name of the town to Missoula, Billings, Bozeman, Kalispell, Helena and wherever else and I think you'll find comments will still run like they do about Gt. Falls.
I don't know a whole lot about it - it was the close"big city" growing up 50 miles away...I think the town is ripe for "green" business growth.
I don't miss the wind. I don't miss the wind chill. But I know I could do worse than Gt. Falls.
I don't know of any decent hang-outs for an evening, I remember Borrie's being very good and popular.....I'm looking for ideas - I'll be there for a motocross race the end of the month.
People use duct tape to fix everything. God used nails.

Might I suggest the curb in front of M & H?
A more discriminating gentleman may prefer the alley behind That Bar.
But for some real kicks, hop in your time machine and head for The Fusebox circa 1990.

I played baseball with Ryan for quite a few years. He's a pretty good guy as long as everything is going is way. Watch out if it isn't tho...that dude had some serious problems.
