Being new I am sure this has been brought up before, but I recently saw a clip on ESPN where Leaf is coaching at West Texas AM. He said he thought coaching in MT would be a dream job.
I know Montanan's have bad blood about his comments about Montana in the past, but really isn't it time to let it go. Keep in my he spent his time in Great Falls...I'll watch what I say, but who here hasn't at time had an ill word for Great Falls?
Great Falls is a great town with great people. There have been some super athletes come from there and most would not have ill words for Great Falls. Leaf is an idiot who has on national TV stated that he wished he was not from Montana. He was a little prick in Highschool and is one of those people who will always have the attitude that his chair is higher than yours. I wish him never to coach in Montana.

Look, I wasn't trying to get your panties in a bunch about Great Falls. I come from metro Detroit, so I know all about defending a city from negative comments. I have spent plenty of time in Great Falls and had some great times there at the fair and the rodeo for example. That being said, I know people from there that had negative things to say about it...maybe its one of those things where 'I can joke about my family but you can't'.
Just curious GFcat, you have never taken a shot at GF? Ever? I mean Montana is a wonderful state with many great towns, is GF really your favorite?
In point of fact, I don't believe Leaf dissed or disowned Great Falls or Montana (or CMR) very much (or at least nothing like what is portrayed today). I recall a one-line quote that got some publicity. I recall at the time thinking that it wasn't completely clear what he was saying, and I thought it was being a bit overblown by the media in Montana. I think this may have been when he was just finishing at WSU, or at least came from an interview or discussion that occurred at WSU. I have looked for the quote in the past, but not found it. I am not aware of any other interview, but may have missed other things, I suppose.
I think most of this supposed dissing on Great Falls or Montana is urban legend. My theory is that it came during the period that Leaf was saying some stupid things, playing erratically, and getting into trouble with the media--as well as doing some stupid things in bars around Montana. In Great Falls, there was/is a split of opinion on him (of those who actually knew him). Some people thought he was a jerk and some people liked or were fine with him.
If someone digs up that one quote, or others, please post.
I think he said something to the effect that he didn't consider himself to be "from" Montana anymore, since he hadn't lived there for so long. And of course people wanted to maim him.
Fair enough...I agree there are lots of things to like about GF. I was not trying to open a bash GF thread, just was wondering how much of whatever Leaf might have said has to do with people talk smack about their hometown but don't reallly mean it.
I am sure if you wer from Gary, IN or Newark or North Dakota (insult intended) you may bad mouth the place but still be able to name 50 things you love about it.

Great Falls gets a "designation" as being boring because it does not have a college football team, therefor it is considered less than then other towns.
It has many things to offer and you don't know about them until you spend some time here and visit them all.
can make the same salary in GF as in Missoula and take most of it home in savings rather than home mortgages, etc.
I too grew up in GF, graduated from CMR a few years prior to Dickenson and Ryan Leaf (87).
I honestly don't get back more than 2 times a year, for holidays or special occasions.
There is something about GF that I don't like anymore. Not to knock the town at all.. but as I drive into town, it just feels odd. Kind of a bit of an inferiority complex perhaps. Like a little brother that is trying to be like his big brother, but he's about 2 steps behind in all aspects.. Can't quite put my finger on it...
Anyhow.. loved growing up there.. lots of great memories but I'd never go back after living in both Billings and Missoula.

That sounded an awful like a description of msu fan, inferiority complex, etc....

I spent a lot of time in GF in my youth. A grandmother lived near the old Columbus hospital and my dad graduated from GF high. I've always had the impression that GF was an old, dieing town hanging on because of Malmstrom AFB.
There used to by a big rivalry between Billings (my hometown) and Great Falls to see which city had the largest population. Now that the question has been settled for a while the eagerness to bash GF has evaporated. I have fond memories of the place and wish nothing but the best for it.

Great Falls is fine, but how come you have to go to Black Eagle to get a decent meal? Ala 3-D and Borries.
