Spitzer is going down. I can't imagine he can survive this. People will be relentless in coming after him. If he's caught in some investigation, then the chances of him going down increase. Couldn't happen to a better person.
Spitzer was the initial subject of the investigation, which started last fall when a bank reported suspicious banking activity to the IRS. The IRS started investigating posssible "structuring" of financials transaction, in which money (often cash) is moved (in this case withdrawn) from bank accounts in smaller chunks (several thousand dollars), in order to stay below the $10,000 level for which the bank must file reports with a federal agency. The initial investigation involved looking to see if he was involved with bribes (which turned out not to be the case).
Spitzer may end up getting indicted for this. Talking heads indicate that he could also be indicted for his role in the prostitution, but usually the "client" isn't indicted in these situations.
Spitzer is lawyering up. One of the firms hired is the NY firm that defended Libby, the former Cheney aid. I think his resignation may come as soon as tomorrow.
Here are some quotes from a story:
"Part of the transcript reads:
Lewis said that "Kristen" would go directly to room 871.
Client 9 asked Lewis to remind him what "Kristen" looked like and Lewis said that she was American, petite, very pretty brunette, 5 feet 5 inches, and 105 pounds.
Client 9 said that she should go straight to 871, and if for any reason it did not work out, she should call Lewis.
According to the transcript, "Client 9" made it apparent to the service's agent that it wasn't the first time he'd used the service before. "Yup, same as in the past, no question about it," he said when referring to payment arrangements.
Later, the agent told "Kristen" that the client would "ask you to do things that, like, you might not think were safe -- you know -- I mean that ... very basic things. ... 'Kristen' responded: 'I have a way of dealing with that. ... I'd be like, listen dude, you really want the sex?' ... You know what I mean.'"
Photos of his wife may help explain the situation/motivation.

Republicans in the New York legislature threatening impeachment unless he resigns in 48 hours.
Spitzer is a Hillary super delagate, the Lt Gov from NY is a BO supporter. Could this be the first dirty trick of the year. Conspiracy 101. BO fires the first shot.

Not sure how this can be construed as a dirty trick by BO. Looks to me like a self inflicted wound.

18 Arrested in Lucrative Prostitution Ring Out of Staten Island
NY Times ^ | April 8, 2004 | WILLIAM K. RASHBAU
''This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,'' the state attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, who oversees the task force, said in a statement. ''It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring, and now its owners and operators will be held accountable.''
As I suspected, here are some views from Wall Street:
On Wall Street, where Spitzer built his reputation as a crusader against shady practices and overly generous compensation, cheers and laughter erupted Monday from the trading floor when news broke of his potential ruin.
Many in the financial industry had long complained that the man known as "Mr. Clean" and the "Sheriff of Wall Street" was a sanctimonious bully who was just trying to advance his political career. Many Wall Streeters were delighted to see him get his comeuppance.
"The irony and the hypocrisy is almost too good to be true," said Bryn Dolan, a fundraiser who works with many Wall Street employees. "If he had any shame, he would've already resigned."

As much as I love watching hypocrites get busted, and Spitzer's own criminal activity notwithstanding, weren't a lot of the people he went after actually guilty of hurting other people?
He's going down for much more than high priced romps in the sack.
Money Laundering - he was playing a finanical "shell game" in order not to get busted for paying high end prositutes. Guess how we found out that he was a visitor to a high end brothl?

I have only caught bits and pieces of articles so far. Was the money he was using "dirty?" Was he avoiding paying taxes on it? Just moving money around to pay whores isn't illegal on its own, is it?
It would be kind of a shame for any pol to go down for a crime as pointless as prostitution, but I've never really been a Spitzer fan, so I could live with it. I had kind of assumed that there must be a lot more to it than just hookers, though ... like a way he can afford to spend $80K on hookers without it being obvious to others in the family (meaning other sources of incomes that were dirty).

he was moving around money to avoid getting caught using prostitutes....kinda pointless crime for somthing that he would survive for if he was just busted for visiting prostitutes

I had read something along those lines in terms of them at first thinking that he was hiding bribes or something, but I never did piece together how simply moving his own money around was illegal. I need to do more reading on it.

One article I skimmed said that that was exactly how he was caught. I could be wrong, but I thought the investigation started because a red flag was raised about a lot of cash being moved......by a public official.....and led to the prostitution charge. If he would've stayed with a $500 escort he might have been all right as far as a gov't sting goes. But any time a public official moves that kind of money......or someone's the recipient of that much cash regularly, the gov't's gonna come to get their take.
