I had that happen up 8 mile creek out of florence once right at dusk. I was chirping on a cow call in some real thick brush - couldn't say ten feet...and all of sudden I hear this guttural call behind me.....brush was so thick, I couldn't see him....could hear him though......I stopped dead in my tracks and it got dark....he must have picked up scent and took off......talk about heart in my throat.......

Went back the next morning, but with a clear nite and full moon..he was gone.....

I had a similar thing happen, except with 3 black bears...a sow and her two two-year-old cubs behind Table Mountain above the Clark's Fork in the Beartooths.

I was elk hunting on the side of Burnt Mt. in sparse timber. I saw them headed uphill about 75 yds in front of me so I knelt down to wait for them to get out of my way. When they got above me about 50 yards, they turned and started walking slowly right at me, I mean I was directly in their path. I hoped they'd smell me and take off, but they didn't and when they were about 30 feet away I pulled the trigger of my rifle that was resting on my leg and pointed in the air. I hoped the noise would make them stop...they didn't even flinch. The sow was in front and finally when she was close enough that I could see her eye lashes, she stopped, put her her nose in the air and snorted and then took off, with cubs following, directly towards the direction they had come. And don't believe anyone who says they can't run downhill...no person could take off down that mountain like they did.

I always wondered what would have happened if she hadn't finally smelled me, or what would have happened if they'd been grizzlies.

My hunting was done that day. I headed straight toward where I knew the trees ended and got the h--- off the mountain. Talk about a racing heart.

Fortunately, my scent would have been well disquised by the big pile of crap that would have been in my pants.
