I just saw this map about Real ID and notice Montana is one of 4 states that hasn't yet files for the extension.

The legislature voted not to comply with it in their last session. It will be interesting seeing what this means.

To apply for the extension it is up to Attorney General Mike McGrath per Montana, he is the head of the DMV and not Swietzer. If he doesn't apply for the extension we will probably have to wait in longer lines at airports just to get through security. People with MT Drivers Licenses may even be denied boarding. If you are flying anywhere, it will be a good idea to use your passport instead of your drivers license.

Schweitzer said in a recent interview he would "bet the ranch" that a MT drivers license will be all the ID Montanans would need.

Let's hope so. However, Schweitzer is very good at grandstanding and this is the feds were talking about. I am sure McGrath and Schweitzer will get something worked out because if they don't there is going to be a lot of pissed off Montanans if they can't get home!

From what I understand (and somebody please correct me if I am wrong) it is nothing more than your ordinary drivers license. However, there is a little "something" extra on it that basically keeps track of you.

Supposedly if you do not have this "real ID" you may be denied boarding at airports, can't enter a nuclear power facility and other places. Montana is already ready to role with production once the go a head is made. You will have the new type of drivers license the next time you renew and the "real ID" info will already be placed on it, but not "activated" until Montana is in full compliance. Now, with a new president in place next year who knows what is going to happen. The whole thing may be scraped.

As I understand it, the "Real ID" is basically a national identification card. It would be used for all governmental purposes for identification, including airport and security screening, I think borders (Canadian), etc. That is about as much as I know about it.

Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, but they do have a lot of info about real ID
