I think everyone would agree however, most successful D-1 college basketball programs are predominatly black----not white. #twocents

I would say over the last 20 years Duke has probably had more white players than black. UCLA back in it's run had a lot of white players.

I think it's too hard of a statement too support. However, I wonder if anybody has researched such a stat or correlation?

This thread started out as Monty No. 4 in coaches starting with Heathcote and degenerated into black/white.

Going back to the thread...

Jim Brandenburg does NOT belong among top 4. He inherited Heathcote's stuff, brought in Lee Johnson who cost about 8 forfeit losses, and moved on to Wyoming after his second year, I think.

He certainly did NOT accomplish in two years what Larry K did in two years. So no to Jim B.

And UCLA did have a string of great black players, most notably Alcindor, Wicks and Rowe, along with Hazard. Just for starters. Walton and Goodrich were probably the best of the whiteys.

Where is the thread going now? Into UCLA history?

This is an odd cultural phenomenon of the salt and pepper mix in college hoops. Most programs have at least one pepper assistant coach on the staff. I think this is a poor lack of judgement on Tinkles behalf and he needs to make a change with his assistants...to show he might have some kahunas.

Black families will have a hard time sending their sons to an all white program, including all white coaches to a place on the globe near north Idaho. They need someone (a recruiter) they can connect too and trust.

Leroy Washington did a great job recruiting high character black players during his time at UM. Without doubt, any inner city kid who comes to Missoula will experience culture shock, despite the fact Missoula is as cool as it gets.

Wayne needs to step up, make a change with his assistants (WHICH IS NEEDED) and hire a black assistant coach or face the perception of racism by many.

Making a change with one assistant has many upsides for Wayne, but does he have the balls to pull the trigger...?

He needs to recognize some type of change is needed vs trying the same recipe again.

Bringing it back to Tinks again, but he is the boss.

i agree with beastie on this one. and i wish the choice were one of our own. over the years, i'm guessing that betwen fifteen and twenty per cent our our teams have consisted of black players, and you certainly can't talk about basketball at montana without mentioning many of them--mike murray, micheal ray, derrick pope,
leroy washington, rod brandon, tony reed, eric jordan, nate atchison, delvon anderson, travis decuire, brandon dade, eric bowie, dominique davis, shane christiansen, matt williams, dan trammel, david bell, marcus rosser, victor venters, kamaar davis, virgil matthews, bryan ellis, stuart mayes, among others. krysko's first move as head coach was to bring micheal ray back to the campus to remind people of the montana tradition, and i wish we could bring someone--leroy? travis decuire?--back as an assistant or maybe even eventually head coach.

As much as LeRoy moves around it is about time for him to come full circle. Great guy, great recruiter, but does anyone know why he never gets a look as a HC? Does anyone know where LeRoy is now? I think he was at Idaho, but they fired the HC and he is no longer listed on the Vandal website.

This what I never understood about the Marso hire. First of all Marso was given the job with out and interview process and secondly most College basketball programs have a minority status coach on staff whether it's Grad asst. or regular asst. and Tinkle some how got away with out hiring or even interviewing a minority canidate. It would be one thing if they opened the position up to applicants and couldn't find a minority canidate that meant the job requirements but, by being a public institution and just giving the job to somebody is not good for public perception. I agree Tinkle does need to make some staff changes but, I think he is too nice and it's going to be his downfall in the end.

I know when Holst was fired he put in for the Griz job but, Hogan had Kennedy in line for it, which truned out to be just awesome #tounge but, I wonder if he has an aspirations to be a HC. Leroy is an easy going fun loving guy and that's what makes him such a great recruiter and assistant coach. If he is free from Idaho I think the UM should try and get him back in Missoula.

I am almost certain LeRoy has applied for a few HC positions and has never been a finalist, which strikes me as odd given his popularity among coaches combined with his ability to recruit. Is he getting a bad rap for his coaching ability? Maybe we will see him on the bench assisting Mike Montomery. LeRoy has already worked for Stew and Blaine.
