I agree with you on the Henkel comment. As for the financial one I don't see it. The comments that were made were very general and in no way were pointed at the Garland's financial situation as a family. Andy is a good player that had a goal to play D1 and he could if he wanted to. Andy is a smart kid and clearly is not going to pass up a scholarship for no scholarship. I think we can all agree that college education is not cheap and using good judgement is priceless. The other thing is he can transfer from NAIA to NCAA and not have to sit out a year if he wants. Lot's of players over the years have started out at lower than D1 and ended playing D1 later on. So maybe that's in his future.
I am assuming he is getting an academic scholarship as NAIA doesn't offer athletic schollies.
Not to mention that the Carroll coach announced that he has accepted a scholarship to play there ... which certainly suggests that he is getting a scholarship to play basketball:
If he was getting an academic scholarship, the basketball coach wouldn't be the one making the announcement ... that would be a pretty transparent fraud if the NAIA didn't allow scholarships.
NAIA very certainly gives athletic scholarships. It's NCAA Div. III that does not award athletic scholarships.
You are correct 68, I think maybe bigtyme may have gotten confused because a lot of NAIA schools can not give full-ride athletic scholarships where everything is covered. They can however cover tuition, and partial housing, no books etc.
My sister got a "full" scholarship to play basketball at Rocky, which didn't cover everything, but covered a lot. I believe (don't quote me on this) that what she had to pay on top of the scholarship was about the same as what it would have cost to attend UM or MSU. I would guess that most schollies at Carroll are similar. Most probably don't cover all costs, even when they are full scholarships. It's just the nature of the beast when attending a private school.

frontier schools do get full scholarships to award basketball players. However, especially in Carroll's case they look to find quality students who get academic help. Many of their players are on both academic and athletic scholarships that add up to a full scholly. This allows some of the schools to make their 10 or so full schollies go as far as possible. If you look at the four guys CC has committments from to date this year, the lowest GPA is about a 3.8. That is not a coincidence. I'm not saying Carroll wouldn't take a marginal student, but it definately behooves them to find the combination of a "student-athlete".
