Andy Garland commits to Carroll college,( see link below) Garland should be a very very good Frontier player. There is a side of me that wishes we would have gotten the chance to see if he could play at the D-1 level, but I am kind of selfish. I really believe that if D-1 schools were still allowed 15 scholarships he would be playing D-1 ball. I think he is equal if not a better prospect than Carson Durr was. He was also one of my favorite high school basketball in I have seen over the past 10 years. While he was a marginal D-1 player, he was a fantastic high school players.

Was Garland really in need of a schollie and is that maybe why he didn't walkon as a lot of UM and msu players from MT have done in the past? As you know, many walkons have become all conference players.
I know he was hoping to get some scholarship money from the Cats but, it sounds like they wanted him walk-on as well. That's too bad because I think if he got a shot at D1 ball he could have done some help for either program but, Andy is the type that he's not going to turn down Scholarship $ for a walk-on spot. I agree with the Carson Durr comment. Well it's on to NAIA All-American status for him. Any word on what Henkel is going to do? I think he will be steal for anyone who signs him.
I think when the Cats got a commit from Austin Brown earlier this month it pretty much in my mind told me the Cats were not going to offer. Every thing I have heard was that the MSU coaches really really liked Garland, he was the co-MVP of the Cats summer Camp along with future cat Tyler Miller. Brown though is the same player as Garland.
I do not think Garland have the resources of lets say a few other Griz walk-ons, and remember he has a twin sister who will also be attending college this fall. That is a huge hit for any family. I would also say it is nice to go to a place that wants you enough to give you a scholarship, it is a pride thing. I know a gentleman who was told by his grandfather he would pay for college at any school he wished attend and this kid and his family really wanted him to play for the home town team, but they would not offer him, so he went to a school a 1000 miles away, that that did offer him a scholarship, it was all pride.

Pride maybe but, Andy is a pretty humble and savy kid and with costs of living being what they are it makes huge financial sense to take assistance over not and you are definitely right he will get a great education and playing for a program that get's 20 plus wins a season.
I usually just lurk on this blog during my lunch but I feel compelled to reply today. I am appalled this forum is being used to speculate on the financial state of the Garland family. I live over in Billings and don't know them personally, but I do know it is uncomfortable to read such gossip.
Also, AllWeatherFan's calling out a high school kid on the blog is strange. A professional athlete could be subjected to such criticism, but really? A teenager? I don't think it is appropriate to belittle him on a blog that is supposed to be about Grizzly basketball. I don't know Mark Henkel but I know of his family that's enough for me. Good folks.
Congrats Andy! And thank you for an outstanding prep career. And good luck Mark! You will succeed in life regardless of what AllWeatherFan thinks of you.
I know where I won't be surfing around on my lunch in the future.

I appreciate your points and I went back and re-read the posts to figure out if I was the offending party. I really did not see anyone speculate on his families financial situation specifically, but more in general term as to what it is like to send children thru college. I have two kids and one that is 6 years away from college and anyway you look at it is college is spendy. My comments were simply, that a family that had two kids entering collegeat the same time, the cost of tuition will be a big issue, no matter what your income level. I do not know what the Garland family situation is at all, but I feel safe in saying that for 80-90% of the population of this state financial hit of two kids entering college will be an issue that will take a lot of considerations.

Well I asked the question about whether he needed the schollie, and wasn't intending to disparage the family in anyway. I was simply asking because I know Garland really wanted to play D1. If you were offended, my apologies, there was no intent to do so.

I agree with you on the Henkel comment. As for the financial one I don't see it. The comments that were made were very general and in no way were pointed at the Garland's financial situation as a family. Andy is a good player that had a goal to play D1 and he could if he wanted to. Andy is a smart kid and clearly is not going to pass up a scholarship for no scholarship. I think we can all agree that college education is not cheap and using good judgement is priceless. The other thing is he can transfer from NAIA to NCAA and not have to sit out a year if he wants. Lot's of players over the years have started out at lower than D1 and ended playing D1 later on. So maybe that's in his future.

I was a bit harsh. I occasionally blog with some folks on the gazette prep sports blog and things get so personal. I just like straight hoops talk, you know? I'll settle down now! And I do apologize for my butting in...

Good post. Garland will get a great education at Carroll, and perhaps down the road he will be in a Griz uni. Lord knows the Griz have sent a few over to Carroll.
I have always thought that Andy Garland was one the best high school players I have seen. He is not flashy so doesn't get much credit. His rebounding skills are phenominal, and is just a solid player.
But, I have always felt he was going to be a tweener at the D1 level. At his height he probably was more of a three, but is not probably as quick as say a McGillis. I think a comparison could be made that he is like a Jeff Hays (another smart, great player).
Does anyone know if Brian Foran from Winifred has signed anywhere?
Winifred kids get money from a scholarship if they go to MSU and I have heard that MSU is on him and he might be walking on here with a chance at a scholly later on. That non-athletic scholarship could be an added incentive to walk on here over another DI school. Other than that, I don't know what other schools other than Carroll he might go to.
