Beavers hire men’s basketball coach

Sources say Brown’s Robinson headed to OSU

Gazette-Times

Several internet media outlets have announced that Oregon State has hired Brown’s Craig Robinson as the school’s new men’s basketball coach.

There has been no official word from Oregon State.

Jeff Goodman of foxsports.com and Gary Parrish of cbssportsline.com both report that the Beavers have hired Robinson to take over for Jay John, who was fired in January.

Goodman reports that the Beavers chose Robinson over IUPUI coach Ron Hunter.

Robinson is the brother-in-law of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. In his second season, Robinson led Brown to a 19-10 overall record, including an 11-3 record in the Ivy League.

Before heading to Brown, Robinson spent six years as an assistant at Northwestern.

On the surface it seems like a strange hire, but who knows.

I thought Robinson was up for the Providence job which makes more sense than Oregon State. It sound like the guy has done a good job at Brown but, I don't recall them being the NIT or NCAA tourney the last couple of years.

At this point i think OSU was thrilled to have a coach say yes. I am not sure he knows what a mess he is getting himself into. It doesn't appear on the surface he has recruiting connections in the Pacific Northwest and he may have bitten off more than he can chew.

Did Bone really want the job? The one article on Espn made it appear he was like Bennett. Maybe this Mexican hat dance with his playres has caused OSU to distance themselves from him being a canidate? Oregon is a very liberal state in some areas. No pun intended for Robinson being related to Obama with the last sentence. #thumb

Odd hiring! Robinson has no real connections to the west coast, for recruiting, has a very limited resume as a head coach, and even his win / loss record as a head coach were not all that spectacular. They really seem to be going out on a limb for this hire.

On the plus side no one out west here know jack about this guy so their can not be a lot of criticism ...... at least for a while.

Hey, all he has to do is win one conference game next year and the season will be a huge success!

I wouldn't bet on that happening.
