Griz hoops wraps up recruiting with JC prospect
Posted on April 29

MISSOULA - The signing of another junior college player to a national letter of intent this week has wrapped up basketball recruiting for University of Montana men's basketball.

Head coach Wayne Tinkle announced the signing of 6-3, 215-pound junior Vassy Banny from Salt Lake Community College.

Banny, from Adidjan, Ivory Coast, can play either big guard or small forward. He was second in rebounding at 5.1 a game and third in scoring at almost 10 points per game for the 32-4 Bruins.

Salt Lake CC advanced to the 2008 national junior college championship game in Hutchinson, Kans., losing 67-56 to South Plains College from Texas in the title game.

The well-rounded Banny was ranked in numerous statistical categories in the strong Scenic West Athletic Conference including fourth in field goal percentage (56.3), seventh in steals (1.75 per game); 11th in rebounds (5.4 per game); 14th in assists (2.5 per game); and 18th in scoring (9.9 points per game).

"The fact that he comes from such a successful, winning program excites us," Tinkle said. "He's a 3.4 student, and we are confident that with his personality he will be popular in our community and with his teammates."

"Vassy scores in a variety of ways, and he is a physical specimen," said 17-year Salt Lake CC head coach Norm Parish. "He is a good rebounder, a very good passer, and can be a really good defender as well.

"He is also a very good teammate, and he's just a good young man, Parish added. "Basketball-wise his best days are still ahead of him."

It sounded like the Griz were really hot on Kenny Daniels....then they sign Banny?? what gives here?? Is Banny that much better than Daniels?? Looks like he doesn't shoot it nearly as well as KD..... or was our staff just impatient with Daniels because he is holding out for a couple more visits....any info on this would be much appreciated as well as any new info on our current recruits as well as our next signing......SB16,MslaCat, GrizBacker......or anyone else with inside knowledge about these recruits......Also....how does our class stack up so far with the rest of the Big Sky???
Banny started on a super-loaded JC team that finished as national champs runner-ups. Guys who did not even start on this team are getting D1 scholarships. I'm don't think comparing him with Daniels, on a stats only basis, tells the whole story. #twocents

Whiz....I definatly agree with you....I wasn't trying to say Banny was a bad recruit....I just was under the impression it was Daniels who we really wanted. I'm glad we got Banny and from what it sounds like he's exactly what this team needs. Very excited about what Tinks is doing this offseason!!!! #dance
