HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- There will be no playoff for the BCS anytime soon.
Bowl Championship Series officials rejected a plan Wednesday to turn the controversial system for deciding a national champ into a four-team playoff, starting in the 2010 season.
After threel days of meetings, the BCS conference commissioners decided to move forward with the current system, rejecting the notion of a "plus-one" format to decide a champion. The SEC and ACC presented a specific plan that would have pitted the No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 and No. 3 in a Final Four of football. The Big Ten and Pac-10 were opposed.
The earliest this concept could likely be reconsidered is 2014.
"The BCS is in an unprecedented state of health," ACC commissioner and BCS chair John Swofford said Wednesday.
Said SEC commissioner Mike Slive: "There isn't enough support now for this. I believe we can look at it again in the future."

The BCS is BS.
Now, FBS college football fans will have to live with more controversy through 2014.
When will they ever take lessons from FCS?
People say its because the conferences don't want to lose any of their guaranteed money, but IMAGINE what kind of income could be created with a playoff system. Hell, Ohio State wouldn't have a 57 day layoff between the Michigan game and their bowl game. They would be playing Bowl games to reach a title contest. (If they lose, another storied program would take their place).
There alone would generate so many more dollars for their precious Conference coffers. There are so many more further examples. Use all the bowl games to give implications for determining a champion and interest and dollars goes up exponentially quick! It would be bigger than the SuperBowl and March Madness combined IMO.
All that's left is more controversy on the field where media and sportswriters determine a champion instead of the athletes themselves on the field. What a terrible shame.
How many teams will have a right to complain they weren't in the championship game next year?
Again, What a disgrace.
Just waiting for Slick to take over. Those will be fun years to watch Griz Football.
It makes me ill that the 'major conferences' (like the Pac-10, Big 10, Big 12) are opposed to a real championship, one being decided on the field. I've never been an SEC backer, but I am impressed that the proposal to have an actual playoff came from the SEC. If for no other reason, I'd rather UM remain a I-AA school, a division in which a legitimate champion is determined.
