Point guard Vinnie McGhee, Jr., the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year, said Thursday he plans to leave Sacramento State.
McGhee said he has been given a release from the school but does not yet know where he will transfer. The 6-foot freshman from Oakland mentioned West Coast Conference and Big West Conference schools and Creighton as possibilities.
McGhee, who averaged 12.1 points, 5.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season, said new Hornets coach Brian Katz, who replaced Jerome Jenkins last month, was not the reason he's transferring.
"Me and Coach Katz, we got along very well," McGhee said. "He wished the best for me and my future. It was nothing personal."
McGhee said he reached his decision before Katz signed Fresno City College point guard Mike Marcial, the state tournament Most Valuable Player in 2007, earlier this week.
"I'm just trying to get ready for a bigger conference and just get better with my education," said McGhee, who under NCAA rules would sit out next season before transferring to another Division I school.
"I played under Coach Jenkins and he left. I didn't know what I was going to do."
That sucks for Sac but I am not really surprised. It was recently announced that the new arena wasn't going to happen and that a remodel of that piece of shit Hornet's nest was the best they could do. Hell, I would leave too if i was this young man. He can play at a few WCC schools.
