Read was smart to play divII teams. he inherited a crappy larry donovan program and needed to generate a winning attitude. thus the passing game and divII schools. as he built his program he was able to take more chances with divI teams. The griz of the 80's desperately needed to play a light schedule. the griz of today don't need that. it only hurts the product on the field not the bottom line.

Talk to Read if you get a chance. He will tell you if he was the Griz Coach today he would still want to schedule DII teams and not play FBS teams for the exact same reasons he gave when he was the Griz Coach. Anyone willing to wager some substantial cash on that PM me.

Read had teams that played at Oregon and at Oregon State. Those are two games I remember off of the top of my head

I never said he didn't play the games. Read also took the Griz to play Kansas State. My point was he didn't like playing up and didn't hide that sentiment from anyone. He felt there was nothing to gain, and a LOT to lose. He did what his AD told him was necessary just like a lot of other HC's do.
I already have all of your Monopoly money when you went BK after landing on Park Place. The wager is Cash (legal tender)only, no checks, IOU's, Markers, etc. If you have to ask for a definition of substantial, me thinks you aren't gonna wanna play.
In the article, O'Day was quoted as follows: ....Olympic sports like soccer, track and field and tennis we're all pretty much on the same level. (WAC and Big Sky) Wow, what an uninformed statement from an individual who is supposed to be our AD....comparing UM tennis, which is nothing more than a club sport to teams in The WAC. Currently, in Men's Tennis, Boise State is ranked 36 in the nation and Hawaii is ranked 66 in the nation. In Women's Tennis, Fresno State is currently ranked 16 in the nation and Boise State is ranked 44 in the nation. Fresno State has made it to the sweet 16 of The NCAA Championships 3 out of the last 4 seasons.

Spanky,
It appears you are just looking for anything to take a shot at O' Day. The article was about moving up in FB, anyone who thinks the other sports are driving it is. Is this the response to the article you told us to wait for??
gb1: I don't think I said anything about what read would or wouldn't do if he were coach now. All I said was read was smart to play cupcakes in order to build a wining attitude, which the griz didn't have. maybe he did or didn't like to play up, he sometimes played and spanked the griz when he was at psu(div2). lomax was a good one.

Hokey,
OK, works for me. I wasn't directing my comments about what Read would do now toward you, sorry if you thought so.

For Cross-Country, the WAC would be a step back for a national power like NAU. At least in the Big Sky, teams like Weber are tradionally top-50 teams to challenge us.
But of course, the only thing that drives conference changes are Football and Basketball.
GB1....the article wasn't about moving up in football. The article was about changing conferences. O'Day was the one that commented about soccer, track and field, tennis, not me. These are sports included in the athletic program at UM as well as basketball and football. Yes, I will have additional comments to make about the article.

Of course it was about football, which is why the APP St AD was quoted. Do you honestly believe the conversation would even take place if not for FB?
Probably not, however, the thrust of the article was about moving from 1AA to 1A as well as a change to The WAC Conference....further, several other sports were mentioned.

And there wouldn't be a sniff of an article if not for football. FB and basketball make all the other sports possible. If those sports were not generating the income they do, we would be reading Letters to the Editor in The Missoulian suggesting athletics be dropped at UM.
I'm amused by the poll and the attitude the anti move guys have towards it.
It's unscientific.
It only represents 124 people.
It doesn't really represent the fans that don't read eGriz.
The people that vote in that poll are football fanatics and don't represent the everyday fan.
What's funny is that these same posters were saying "what a good measurement the poll was of the pulse of the Griz Nation" when the anti move sentiment was 65% against. They loved the polls then.
I remember the pro move guys never poo pooing the poll like this but taking it seriously even when we were way behind. As each poll would conclude we would say "look out we're growing stonger." We wouldn't say it didn't count because it was a stupid message board poll.

You saved the best for last. If you think message board polls are the measureing stick for that the average Griz fan think, you may want to consider some profesional help. Your "anti-move guys" claim is more hyperbole. I bet you can't name 10 of them. If you start with me, you already have one strike against you.
