I have a question for out of towners

Get the low down on Griz Football and the FCS

Postby druhag on Wed May 14, 2008 11:54 am

Another thing to think about is not how many current ticket holders are we going to lose, but how many potectial season ticket holders are going to decied to NOT become a season ticket holder becasue of the cost of fuel. It may effectively shrinking the market for season ticket holders in the future.

We plan on making all the home games. Just made my reservations and the hotel is very expensive. It is our entertainment as we don't go to movies or eat out except when we are traveling. Been saving all Winter for Griz games.
Our car gets about 23-25 miles a gallon.
I guess we'll just take one year at a time.

I am keeping my tickets for this year, but another year of increased ticket prices and increased gas costs and I will be out. FWIW, I will not be at every home game this year, I just cant justify the CWU game particularly.

I wonder what effect this will have on Universities that only get 6000 fans at home games ($10-12 a ticket). These schools are losing money big time on football already. Now travel costs look like they might double. Their already anemic attendence might plummet and they will be paying alot more to travel to away games.

We might see dozens of FCS schools dropping football if the gas goes to $5 a gallon. Football is the biggest money maker for Montana but is the biggest money loser for most FCS schools.

No offense, but if you are going to wait for the government to take care of you, then you are in deep doodoo. People need to take responsibility for themselves in my opinion. Gas prices are still cheap compared to the rest of the non OPEC world. I think we could all see it coming, some prepared, some didn't. Sorry about your job, but you will land on your feet. Good luck. :thumb:[/quote]

Backer I did repair I got rid of my 05 deisel F-250 crew cab and a 06 deisel Jeep Liberty for a couple gas rigs with much better fuel economey. I just could not get a Prias!! I still bought American however. I know the "Govment" won't to a darn thing other than get rich on the rest of us. Thanks for the luck on the job I may have landed one today!!

Everybody complains, but there's always the same amount of cars on the road... so clearly it isn't having as big an impact as everyone says. It's $1.25/liter up here now (equivalent of $4.77/gal), and there's still just as many drivers. Maybe when it's $10 a gallon there will finally be less cars on the road.

My brother and I just decided not to renew our season tickets, but it had much more to do with the stagnant Griz program, poor Big Sky football, and getting tired of watching the Central Washington's, Fort Lewis's, and Northern Colorado's of the world. I am going to catch a few more Wazzu and Idaho games, and if I want to see a Big Sky game, down the road to EWU.

Gas prices are an issue; we're over 300 miles away. But not as big an issue as the games starting at noon or 1 AM, which require two nights in Missoula. Bigger bucks than gas and big time committment. So we can't do all the games, certainly not the Ft. Lewis's, SUU's, No. Co's, etc.

hmm, will I be the only Griz Grad in SloTown? We had a great crowd there last time. I saw many Griz fans on the freeways from LaLaLand to San Luis Obispo last time....Although, from the tenor of these boards, I don't know why the Griz bother to play since it is the concensus here, at least, the they don't have a chance against Cal Poly....Good thing Slotown is a nice place to spend the week end...

Yes, since the Griz struggle along at an 11-1 record against Cal Poly and have never lost in SLO, that's logical. I think you'll see a fair smattering of Griz fans there. The Griz are reloading and CP will be favored, but don't bet the farm against the Griz in this one.

we are actually doing one of the craziest things i can think of - drive from butte through vegas into LA, spend a couple days there and then up to SLO for the game. All of this with 2 young kids and $4 gas. i will drive directly to warm springs when we get back - they should be expecting me.

druhag wrote:LONG ANSWER: 10$ a gallon gasoline could be crippiling to our economy, traveling long distances for griz games would have ended long before it reaches 10$ a gallon. The price of food and the price of oil are directly linked. The production of food requires petroleum products at every step of the way. The tilling of the soil and planting of crops (fuel for the machines), fertilizer is made from petroleum, insectisides are made from petroleum, harvesting requires fuel, then transport. The reason cereal is more expensive now then it was a year ago is because of the increase in price of oil. Airlines are already having trouble paying thier fuel bills. If the price of oil continues to climb, air travel out of missoula might become scarce at best. Airlines are already reducing flights in missoula. The cost of shipping is increasing which will inevitable result in higher prices for goods at best buy and costco, or any store that doesn't sell local prodcucts. The list of conections to your cost of living and the price of oil are endless. As the price of oil increases, your expendable income will decrease and it doesn't just come from pumping gas. People need to understand the externalities of the high price of oil, then they will understand the possible consequeces of our inaction. If we as a counrty do not start to make shifts in our life style, then we are in deep troubel. I live in Kalispell, and right now it cost 50$ for me to drive to Missoula and back. That is not acceptable to me. I have two choices, one is to get a new car that gets better gas mileage, the other is to reduce my trips. Becasue my car is paid off, I am going with option 2 because it doesnt make sense for me to increase my expenses paying off a car loan, to reduce the amount of money I spend on fuel. As a result, I might come down for a regular season game, and if there is a home playoff game I will be in town for turkeyday anyways so I will make that game. I was thinking about adding a seat onto my parents season tickets and going to all the games but that got scrapped a few months ago because of 1 reason, the price of gas.

SHORT ANSWER: YES, the price of gas as it is right now will reduce the number of griz games I am planing to attend.

Hey Funny Water...here's a hint...on the way from Vegas to LA, forget the map...take the Pearblossom Highway at Victorville...it will save about 48 miles and avoids the major freeways in San Berdu and LA...plus, if you are staying in the Valley, you will be half hour closer to Slotown...every little bit helps....I made the drive to Butte last year...for homecoming at UM...nice trip. little traffic...if the price of gas is an issue, maybe the problem isn't gas costs as much as something else...I don't like $4.23 a gallon, but that is what all you GOP voters have brought us...now...if I can't give up a movie or dinner out to go to a Griz game, something is wrong with my economic plan.

It's a real stretch to blame the law of supply and demand (gas prices) on the GOP. In liberal Europe, gas is still twice what it is here because of higher tax. It's all of us GOP voters that have kept income taxes down; watch that change with Dem control. Ms. Pelosi has to take care of all your illegal neighbors down there....

The GOP has had the House and Senate for just 8 years in the past 50. Don't blame this stuff on them. The Dems have had the control the last half century and have done nothing to avert this calamity.

nope...most of are smiling these days. Not only will the Griz do well this year, but so will America.....by the way, "liberal Europe" might pay $5.oo gas..(actually, it was far more last month in Berlin) but, driving a car is not a necessity as there are very, very few places that are not well served by public and semi public transportation...and those taxes? Hmmm, great schools and universities, great infrastructure, clean and beautiful cities, good healthy food, and superb healthcare for all...amazing what you can do with decent government.....we haven't had that in over 12 years!

Postby slimdog on Sun May 18, 2008 8:56 am

If you drive 2 or 3 hundred miles to see the griz play.Round trip will cost you about 20 dollars or less than last year.Thats no big deal if you are a true fan.

Depends on gas mileage the vehicle gets.

Let's take an average between the 200-300 miles and say 250 miles each way.

at 25 miles per gallon = 20 gallons for the trip.
at 18 miles per gallon = 27.7 gallons for the trip.

That's $76 for the 25 mpg car and $105 for the 18 mpg SUV per game. Yes, only $20 to $30 dollars more than last year. But it's $40 to $60 more than just 5 years ago.

Here is a new twist on this question:

Gas prices in Europe are averaging $9.00 per gallon (all U.S), and $11.00 per gallon for diesel.

Would this make you stop coming from out of town?

Not to mention food cost through the roof because of transportation cost. We can all walk to the store with a wheel barrow full of cash to buy a sack of spuds just like the Europeans did after WW2.
