Going to be in Butte in June for a little business and thought I'd bring the family. Two kids 13 and 11. Are there some things they might find fun outside of Butte that we could do in a day? Heard Phillipsburg was worth the drive.........?? All suggestions welcome.

Visit the saphire mine along the way to PBurg - between Anaconda and Hamilton on Route 38, the Skalkaho Road. Great fun for you and the kids.

The owner is from Butte and her husband is a Tech grad.

You can hit Fairmont Hotsprings on the way back to Butte.

Avoid Anaconda at all costs unless you douse the town with Gas on your way through (tossing a match as you leave of course)..

Hey GGG, isn't your wife from Anacon........ Never mind.

The Pit is always pretty interesting. So is the mining museum.

Not sure if the Copper Kings are still playing baseball there.

Lewis & Clark Caverns aren't too far away. They are pretty amazing.

If it's a nice day and you like hiking, you might want to climb the east ridge, up to the Lady of the Rockies. I was about 11 when I did it for the first time, so the kids should be able to handle it...and just to give you an idea of how long it will take, I used to be able to get to the top in about 2.5 hours, back when I was in shape.

Don't want to think about how long it would take me now, though.

Make it fun with science. Take the kids out near the Smelter and test the soils for lead. Then take them to see the locals at Reds Bar in Anaconda.

after you scrape the ice off your windshield when you get up at 10 a.m. #shocked

Actually what I would do is to make sure your have your fishing license (and gear) and hit the upper clark fork, just below the ponds!!!!! Catch and release only though, but there are some nice ones in there!

Yeah, thats an option, too. For me though, it's more about the hike to the top than seeing the statue, so the bus ride wouldn't cut it.

On the way to Phillipsburg, is Georgetown Lake. Truly one of the most beautiful places in God's country.

not sure how much time you have but, you can do lewis and clark caverns in the morning and then make the drive down to virginia city in the afternoon (about an hours drive between the two) - always something going on in vc - check out the brewery follies and the vc players. good stuff.

If you like history Butte is your place. The mines, story of the Copper Kings. The tours that the chamber of commerce has are very interesting. Fairmont Hot Springs has the pools and a golf course. Anaconda has the Jack Nicklaus Old Works golf course and Georgetown Lake is 20 miles away and Phillipsburgs is approx 20 miles from there.

Are they still giving tours of the Copper King Mansion? I thought that was really cool when I was a kid, especially the main shower.

So, how was the trip? What were the highlights for the kids?

Just got back and the kids loved the trip. Did Phillipsburg one day and dug for sapphires lots of fun looking for gems in mud and water. There is a great soda fountain in town for lunch and a huge candy shop with just about every type of candy known to man. The drive was also a highlight, the highway department was clearing rock from a pass and blasting, very interesting as we watched the crew dangle from the mountain and drop rock on the pass.

Day two in Virginia City, another great suggestion. Fun show and Vaudeville act. Great little ghost town with lots of history. Didn't make the Lady of the Rockies (next time). The pit was amazing, Mining museum was also good. Kids also enjoyed the mineral exhibit at Tech.

Pasties were good, had a good meal at Lydia'a and enjoyed Pizza at Silver Bow Pizza....couldn't get the kids to eat a Pork Chop Sandwich but I enjoyed mine. Even got to go by Shepards Candy for some caramel!

Weather was great.....all in all a great trip! Butte people were very friendly and lots of help......!!

If you do the Lewis & Clark Caverns, you'll be close to the headwaters of the Missouri park and the buffalo jump.
