This general election between Obama and McCain is going to be a big test for our country. It makes me very nervous of how big a role race is going to play in this election. I feel it necessary for people to criticize Obama's flaws, weaknesses, and even his belief system as we should do with McCain and any other person running for office. What makes me nervous is that people may be labeled as racist for bringing up such criticisms or racist for defending such criticisms. Moreover, I’m nervous that the African American community will view “White America” as racist for the criticisms. Black leadership and civil rights leadership is heavily backing Obama and the letdown from Obama losing could be gauged as a negative indicator by some in regard to race relations. I’m also concerned that Obama is going to be unfairly connected to some of the extremists that may be involved in these groups. We’ve seen McCain unfairly scrutinized for indirect relationships with extremist religious right groups. I’m afraid that many will unfairly make connections between Obama and some of the extremists that belong to organizations that support him, but at a much bigger scale. Anyways, race is a variable that we’ve never had to deal with in the election of a president. Here is hoping that reason quells bigotry and that we can all respect each other’s political stances without being unfairly labeled.
