September 6th, Montana @ Cal Poly.

Here is a nice article in the Missoulian about the game: http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2008 ... orts02.txt

Should be rocking.

Allegient Air through Vegas to Santa Maria is about as cheap as it gets for a road trip. From Msla. anyway.

We've had our reservations for months. My wife and I will be staying with our son and his family at Camp Pendleton for a few days before and after the weekend. Six of us will be taking AMTRAK from Oceanside to SLO and back. This will be the first GRIZ game for the grandkids. I will be shocked if the GRIZ can win. The polls have the GRIZ over-ranked and CP under-ranked, plus it will be the 'Stangs second game of the season. It still will be a fun weekend!

Are the visitors all seated in the same section? Would we have better seats if we bought tickets from the CP website?

Slotown is great anytime...but with the students there into Mustang football, it is going to be a loud crowd in a newly redone stadium....I hope Montana has as large a turnout as they did last time in SLO. I would suggest getting hotel rooms reserved now as there are many other things going on up there as well....Pismo Beach and Avila are strong back ups if you can get there...The real concern, and it is new for Cal Poly, is how to get tickets before they are sold out..if they aren't now, they will be.....it is a different time for the FCS in California. It is getting more press, more attention, and more fans tired of the scandals of USC, the failures at Stanford and the letdowns at Berkley....San Diego State will probably lose to Cal Poly the week before this game....the Griz are in for a fight...but should be able to handle it...i.e. if they have learned to vary the offence or throw a ball or two....

I have a group of three heading to SLO through Vegas. Friday night Vegas, Saturday night SLO and Sunday night back in Vegas. Need to know where to go for pregame, tailgating, and after game. Any help would be appreciated. Also - best way to get tickets in Griz section, of course.

Go Griz.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread, I just got back from a vacation to Disney Land with my family.

The game should be a sell out. The vistor section is in the top northeast corner of the stadium and is only about 200 seats so I would advise getting tickets as soon as they are available. The only seats that are not that great are the general admission seating in the endzone.

Cal Poly has only allowed tailgating for one year so do not expect it to be anything special. What they have had is what they call the Stampede Club Bar-B-Que. The Stampede Club is for premium ticket holders and it includes a tri-tip bar-b-que with complete with beer, wine and soda for two to three hours before kickoff.

Here a link to a gallery that shows the Stampede Club Bar-B-Que (this is from the UC Davis game two years ago when the west side was still under construction): http://www.i-aa.org/stats/2006/roadralp ... /index.htm

Here is a link about tailgating at Cal Poly: http://www.gopoly.com/index.php?p=sport ... 1&legacy=1

I have not been to the tailgating parking lot because I am a Stamped Club member. I do not think it is a big deal yet and it is a good walk to the stadium (it is out in the sticks). South Dakota State alumni group has made arrangements the last two times they traveled to SLO to set a side an area for them in the Stampede B-B-Q. I think they were charge $15 a person and made it easy for their fans. If anyone is interested I can get a number of the person at Cal Poly that they could make those arrangements with. If that does not work the group that I went to Montana with are talking about actually setting up out in the tailgating area to pay back some of the great hospitality that was shown to us in Missoula.

There's a toll free number for their ticket office in the link Slo provided above. :thumb:

Cal Poly is not ready for Montana fans...

Postby LAGriz67 on Fri Jun 06, 2008 2:23 pm

Cal Poly is still in the contract negotiating stage with their vendors and will not begin releasing or accepting non season tickets or sales until mid August....They will be reserving a small number at that time...they recommend using the Griz ticket office when they are available....again, mid to late August.....they don't seem to be ready for big draw crowds....they even laughed when I said Montana has hundreds of fans that show up from distant places and many might want to make plans for that week end....CALPOLY IS NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME.....

I agree that Cal Poly has a ways to go, but they are headed in the right direction. I also think that they are not ready to sell all their general admission seats to Griz fans. They are still pushing season tickets. I can not say that I blame them. I also know that I had to sweat out getting tickets to the last game played in Montana. They only gave Cal Poly about 150 tickets in a stadium that seats 22,000 so I know how you feel.

While the support of the program may not be ready for PRIME TIME, the football team is. It should be a great game.

well, I would agree with you on a number of points, but I suspect the locals who benefit by the large numbers of visitors NOT on their way to SF, LA, Avila, Pismo, or Cambria-San Simeon, would feel differently. The locals might or might not buy tickets that week end...for those of us who are making the trip from SoCal and points even farther, this is truly the epitome of incompetence....they have had a year to arrange for ticket sales...and they give us (also, Calif. Tax payers) 2 weeks to secure reservations in Slotown, and hope for available tickets...they need to take a lesson from Cal Davis....I have my reservation at the Madonna Inn...so it is not a total loss....and I have friends inSlotown, but would rather be able to get into the game...Also, last homecoming in Missoula, I gave away extra tickets I had purchased months ahead of time...you must not have tried very hard to buy a UM ticket...there are always empty seats (at least for most games) even if they say they are sold out, tickets seem to find their way to those who want them....

SloStang,
Hey, believe it or not, it looks like I will be in your neck of the woods during that time and may be able to make the Griz game. Got 4 weeks of training at Fort Hunter-Liggett from mid August to mid September. Looks like an hour and a half or so from SLO, does that sound about right?

Have no idea of logistics yet, but would love to work it so I can hang out with some great fans and watch some terrific football!

I have to get back to you on how far SLO is from Hunter-Liggett, but it would be great to talk football over a few cold ones with you before the game. Oh yeah, the game should be a good one if the last four between Cal Poly and Montana are any indication.

Sounds great! What a way to start off the year. The only thing that could be better is if I was in Baton Rouge for the App-LSU game...

Hope I can break loose so I can come down. Been to SLO before and found the people friendly and the girls beautiful. Throw in football and it's pretty much paradise! :-)

Just use MapQuest:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/San+Luis+O ... iggett+CA/

It looks like it is about 76 miles ~1-1/2 hours estimated. I would think that you could make it there in a little over an hour...

Hope it works out!

We have 3 of us from Helena flying down to SLO for the game. We are all staying at the Embassy Suites downtown. Is there good places to go on Friday night, any Griz get togethers?

On tickets - I talked with the ticket office at the UM and they said tickets would be available through them after the 1st of July.

Firestone Grill is a good place. Good food (Burgers, steaks ect...) and walking distance to a lot of other bars if you get bored.

I was looking at the possibility of going to the game and I've done some investigation on travel.

The problem with Allegiant is the small number of flights. Missoula-to-Vegas flights are 10:45 AM Thurs and Sun. Vegas-to-Missoula flights are 6:55 AM, Sun and Thurs. Flights from Santa Maria to Vegas get in at 9:20 PM on Sun. Therefore, you have to stay in Vegas till very early on Thursday. Total costs: $336 for air travel, plus luggage, plus a week of hotels, mostly in Vegas.
Msla to LV: $198 RT
LV to Santa Maria: $138 RT

You can't fly to Phoenix as an alternate because there are no flights to California or Las Vegas on Allegiant. Flights to Phoenix are Mon and Fri, and the Fri flight arrives at 9:35 PM ($208 + luggage). Mon departure is 3:55 PM. To get to Vegas from Phoenix would require another airline (roughly $165). Or you could fly directly to SLO on another airline. $288 from Phoenix RT. But remember that you would use two different airports about 25-30 miles apart.

Drive to San Luis Obispo

Missoula 1,343 mi – about 19 hours 47 mins
Denver 1,152 mi – about 17 hours 32 mins
Seattle 1,019 mi – about 15 hours 57 mins
Phoenix 573 mi – about 8 hours 45 mins
Las Vegas 406 mi – about 6 hours 51 mins
San Francisco 231 mi – about 3 hours 47 mins
Sacramento 288 mi – about 4 hours 42 mins
Los Angeles 202 mi – about 3 hours 19 mins

Distances from San Luis Obispo

Santa Maria (39 mi, 43 min)
Oxnard (143 mi, 2 hrs 26 min)
Santa Barbara (100 mi, 1 hr 43 min)
Bakersfield (130 mi, 2 hrs 34 min)
Burbank, N of LA (196 mi, 3 hrs 19 min)
LAX (206 mi, 3 hrs, 23 min)
Fresno (137 mi, 2 hrs, 43 min)

For the adventurous...

Postby LAGriz67 on Sun Jul 13, 2008 1:01 am

Probably the very best dining place in the entire Central Coast and still very affordable is the BIG SKY CAFE in downtown Slotown.. Trust me, I am 40 pounds over weight and I know fine places..this is one of the best....The Big Sky has nothing to do with Montana, though the owner now knows about Montana and the dwarves...
As for getting to SLO...if you can't fly, why not fly into SF or Monterey or Burbank in the South and catch the Coast train..It lets you off downtown and is a gorgeous drive...no matter what the outcome of the game, this would be one trip you would never forget...providing it isn't on fire, that is....Go Griz....wish I were in Butte for the Folk Festival...alas...

Flying into SF or LA and taking the train is a great idea. SF to SLO is gorgeous if it isn't all converted to CO2 by then.

If your choice is between SF and LA I would definately go through SF.

When I have gone to Missoula I have flown out of Santa Barbara though Salt Lake. Santa Barbara is about a one hour forty minute drive from SLO or you could catch the train there.
