Pretty much a good ol' ass kickin:
Turnovers doom N.D. in Badlands Bowl loss

MILES CITY, Mont. — Oh those turnovers.
The Montana all-stars capitalized on four interceptions Friday night while dismantling their North Dakota rivals 54-14 in the 15th annual Knights of Columbus Badlands Bowl at Denton Field.
Leading 14-0 in the second quarter, Montana benefited from back-to-back interception returns that went for touchdowns to blow the game open.
Safety Jordan Heringer’s 37-yard interception return of a Tommy Zinke pass made the score 21-0 with 11:15 to play before halftime.
On the very next possession, Billings West’s Russell Schey brought an interception back 56 yards on quarterback Zach Wentz for six more points as Montana stretched its lead to 27-0.
At that moment, there was no looking back.
The victory stretched Montana’s all-time series lead over North Dakota to 11-4. Not only that, the team was just two points away from claiming a new Badlands Bowl scoring record, which was set in 2004.
Not a bad night.
“We had a great week of practice,” said Billings Central’s Heringer, who was named his team’s defensive MVP for his efforts. “Tonight we were able to make some plays.”
Heringer, who took a week off from his regular summer duties as the Billings Scarlets’ center fielder, said his team’s ability to focus on North Dakota’s passing game was a big factor.
On his game-shaping interception, Heringer was simply in the right spot.
“Really, I wasn’t in good position,” he said. “The ball just kind of came my way. You take those ones and accept them. Those kinds of plays happen.”
Montana took charge of the game in the first quarter when it scored on its second drive. Malta running back Chance Demarais scampered into the end zone from 10 yards out to open the scoring, the first of his three rushing touchdowns.
Later in the quarter, Missoula Big Sky’s Beau Donaldson took a screen pass from quarterback Jared Hunt of Helena Capital and ran 34 yards for another TD.
Donaldson, who finished the game with 94 yards on 16 carries, was chosen as Montana’s offensive MVP.
“It seems like we established the run game and were able to pound it into them,” Donaldson said. “That opened up the passing game. When you have both of those clicking at the same time, it’s difficult to stop any team.”
Montana took a 34-0 lead into halftime following a two-yard touchdown run by Demarais.
North Dakota got going a little bit in the third quarter, getting consecutive scores from wideout Tyler Steffan and running back Michael McAtee, but by then it was much too late.
“Anytime you have turnovers you give great opportunities to the other team,” said Steffan, a Dickinson High School product. “We were unfortunate enough that they scored directly off a couple of them.
“They kind of took control in that second quarter.”
Billings Senior’s A.J. Paine threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, the first to Broncs wideout Sam Gratton, who out-leapt the defense for the score, and the second to Kalispell Flathead’s Mike Gallagher from five yards out.
Despite the offensive success, Montana coach Jim Stanton said his team’s defensive scheme made the difference.
“It was outstanding,” Stanton said. “They were very well prepared and it showed tonight.”
“They probably ran a little more spread offense than we were anticipating,” North Dakota coach Ron Wingenbach said of Montana. “But it was a game that got away from us.”
Paine finished with 86 yards on 12-of-16 passing while Hunt had 108 yards through the air.
Paine gave credit where it was due afterward.
“It’s easy to score points when your defense gives you the ball like that,” Paine said. “Give a lot of credit to them, and a lot of credit to our offensive line and our receivers. Everybody had a great game.”
Steffan had three catches for 94 yards to lead North Dakota’s offense. Wentz, headed to North Dakota State in the fall, had 104 yards passing.
North Dakota’s defensive MVP was Fargo South linebacker Alex Hooey.
Note: Due to upcoming renovations at Whitney Stadium in Dickinson, the 16th edition of the Badlands Bowl will again be played at Denton Field in 2009.
