While I like the graphic - the message space seems a bit cramped. I also notice when larger graphic avatars appear they "shift" the whole scale again and the end result is a post

I agree with this as well... the space has become TIGHT.
There are restrictions as to the size of the a persons 'avatar' but it doesn't seem to stop them from using it.
I dunno I think a link back to the home page for all the other stuff is all thats needed.. not sure we need the whole right side of the screen used for the homepage links...
Most people are still operating under a 800 X 600 screen resolution, unless you got a big 17 or 19" incher, and actually know how to change the resolution. this would make the space even smaller..
