Ochs opens in midseason form
By Andrew Hinkelman, The Daily Inter Lake (Kalispell)

Montana quarterback Craig Ochs was somewhat of a question mark going into last Saturday's season-opener with then-No. 11 Maine.
Ochs had missed a lot of fall camp and both scrimmages, nursing a sprained thumb on his throwing hand.
But instead of struggling, he came out and looked in midseason form, throwing 217 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-33 passing.
And aside from a poorly executed shovel pass in the second quarter (more on that in a minute), not one of Ochs' 11 incompletions were even close to being intercepted. Three were flat-out drops.
Griz coach Bobby Hauck said Tuesday he wasn't surprised at Ochs' exceptional performance, even while playing with a soft cast on his thumb.
"He practiced well all week," Hauck said.

I-AA West: Welcome to Week One
Kent Schmidt, I-AA.org
http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=60028
One week does not a season make but all I-AA Western fans saw some very interesting football this past weekend. We saw some appealing trends and players to watch the rest of the season.
As my colleague, Scott Garner stated "the best action in I-AA this week is mostly west of the Mississippi."
I am not sure if the best action was seen in the West in I-AA play last week but we did see some close contests and a couple of surprises in this first full slate of games this week.
How did the new Great West Football Conference teams look in the opening weekend?
The new Great West Football Conference with its six conference schools began its journey into the I-AA world with two in-conference games and two out of conference games on the true opening weekend of action.
Northern Colorado held on to defeat North Dakota State 15-13 in Greeley, Colorado in the first ever GWFC in-conference game. The Bears held a 15-0 lead with just under ten minutes left in the game on five field goals from kicker Justin Zaitz. Four of the field goals were directly resulted from Bison turnovers, which numbered six on the day (5 interceptions and 1 fumble).
Ineffective NDSU starting senior quarterback Tony Stauss was replaced by freshman Steve Walker (because of a career-high five interceptions) at the ten minute mark in the fourth quarter and led the Bison to two touchdown drives and also set up a drive that would have resulted in a game winning field goal had place kicker Kory Vartanian's kick not been blocked.
While we saw the result in doubt up until the final seconds in Greeley, that was not the case for the second ever Great West conference match-up.
In Davis, California, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits were making their I-AA football debut against the second year I-AA UC Davis Aggies. The Aggies shutout the Rabbits 52-0 and the game was never a contest from the get-go.
UC Davis was led by sophomore quarterback Jon Grant, connecting on 16 of his first 17 passes for 201 yards in the first half and three of his four touchdowns throws. Grant finished the game with 278 yards, completing 20 of 24 passes before being subbed by backup Matthew Engle midway through the third quarter. The Aggies actually scored on their first four possessions in the game (three TDs and 1 FG).
The other two members of the Great West conference (Cal Poly and Southern Utah) played non-conference action.

Bearkats clicking on all cylinders in 60-7 blowout over OBU
By Jason Barfield, Huntsville Item [Griz play at Sam Houston State Sept. 18]
http://www.itemonline.com/articles/2004/09/07/sports/bearkat_n ews/sports45.txt
Everyone who has seen it practice knew how good the Sam Houston State offense could be. On Saturday night against Ouachita Baptist, they showed everyone exactly how dangerous they are.
The Bearkats launched an aerial attack that put together 596 total yards, including 479 through the air in a 60-7 victory over the Tigers at Bowers Stadium on Saturday night.
The game also marked the highly anticipated debut of Texas A&M transfer quarterback Dustin Long. In just a half of play, Long was 11-of-15 for 231 yards and three touchdowns.
"It was nice to get out here with another opponent and see what we can really do," Long said. "We have some playmakers on this team. We just have to get it in their hands and let them make plays."
It didn't take Long and the offense very long to get going. He completed the first pass of the day to Jason Mathenia for a 9-yard gain. After two runs by Jason Godfrey that covered 30 yards, Long hooked up with Jarrod Fuller for a 30-yard touchdown.
"This game started out pretty good for me," Long said. "I got a nice, easy pass to start the game. It just all started clicking after that. I just got it in the receivers' hands and let them do most of the work."
Long played just the first half of the game, completing passes to six different receivers.

Hudson pleased with results in first game of the season
By Cody Stark, Huntsville Item
http://www.itemonline.com/articles/2004/09/07/sports/bearkat_n ews/sports44.txt
Entering Saturday night's game against Ouachita Baptist, new SHSU defensive coordinator Mike Hudson wasn't quite sure where the Bearkat defense really stood.
The defense has been going head-to-head for over a month with a potent Bearkat offense that posted 596 yards of total offense in a 60-7 victory over the Tigers Saturday night.
Now, Hudson has an answer. SHSU held OBU to just 259 total yards and a meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter.
"We really flew around the ball last night and we were hitting hard," Hudson said after watching film Sunday. "The defense played hard and we only worried about what we needed to do."
The Bearkats were able to force Ouachita to punt eight times and because they bottled the Tigers up deep in their own territory, the special teams blocked two punts that went for touchdowns. The turnover battle also went in the Kats favor as they forced four fumbles and recovered two.
"We got two takeaways, but our goal is to get three or more a game," Hudson said. "Ultimately, we want to have a better turnover ratio and at plus-one we were able to get the job done.

Stout MSU back ready to cruise and bruise
By SCOTT MANSCH, Great Falls Tribune
http://www.greatfallstribune.com/news/stories/20040908/localsp orts/1195746.html
Junior-college football stars are often lured to four-year programs with pledges of instant starting jobs.
Justin Domineck came to Montana State, he said, because he was promised just the opposite.
"I came here because they didn't blow any smoke (at him)," said Domineck, a highly regarded running back. "They told me, 'We want you, but we don't need you.' I really love that about this coaching staff. Nothing was going to be handed to me."
Domineck is scheduled to make his first career start in an MSU uniform Saturday afternoon when the Bobcats open the season against NCAA Division II foe Adams (Colo.) State in Bozeman. The transfer from UCLA, by way of Fullerton (Calif.) Junior College, is a big back (5-11, 217) with excellent speed and quickness.
A crowd of perhaps 12,000 and a regional Omega TV audience will be curious to see what all the hype is about.
"I would like to think they'll see a different kind of running back," said Domineck, who rushed for 646 yards and seven touchdowns in nine games last fall at Fullerton. "I'm a physical back, and I like to light up a game and electrify the crowd."
Travis Lulay, MSU's star junior quarterback, said Domineck is not afraid to run it up in there.
"He seems real comfortable running between the tackles," said Lulay. "He's got real quick feet, and he's a big guy who's not easy to take down."

Sebestyen Moves Outside
MSU Sports Information
BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Mike Kramer's penchant for using big words is well known. His current favorites are multiplicity and versatility, words that have led Kramer and his coaching staff to a continuing restructuring of the Bobcat defense.
Kramer said Friday that Ray Sebestyen, Montana State's preseason All-America defensive tackle, made the move to the anchor end position in MSU's base defense. With that move, junior college transfer Daryl Rogers is elevated to the top spot at defensive tackle. Ryan Cogley remains the backup at anchor end, while Clive Lowe returns to the rush end position to share time with starting senior Chad Gluhm.
"Multiplicity has really become the buzzword in the entire sport of football," Kramer said. "That's really happened in college football, being multiple and versatile have become key concepts."
The ability to be multiple, to change looks and give opposing offenses different twists, led Kramer and MSU defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski to shift Sebestyen outside. "Ray has very good hands and excellent vertical blast," he said. "He's a guy who knows how to play, and plays relentlessly."
Kramer said Sebestyen's move is a response to a desire to optimize Lowe's value at the rush end position, and to get emerging players such as Rogers, Tim O'Tool, and Andy Matakis on the field at the tackle position next to stalwart nose guard Beau Clark.
"We look at this as a solution to a moral problem, which is that we have a lot of guys in that front seven that deserve a chance to be on the field," Kramer said. "There is a wealth of intelligence and a wealth of ability, and utilizing it this way is a natural progression for our defense."
Kramer comes back to the youth, talent, and depth at defensive tackle as keying the move of Sebestyen outside. "We feel really good about Andy Matakis, Daryl Rogers, Aaron Papich and Tim O'Tool," Kramer said, referring to the players lining up behind and beside nose tackle Beau Clark. "I'm excited about their physical ability, and excited about the potential for growth at that position."
* * * DAILY NOTES * * *
Injuries continue to affect the Bobcat depth chart, especially at cornerback. Projected starters Kahiam Hunter and Eddie Smith are doubtful for Saturday's season opener against Adams State, leaving Kory Austin and Martin Henderson as the starting corners. Rick Gatewood is also doubtful at receiver, in which case Brandon Roosevelt would move from slot to Z and Michael Williams would start at the slot.
