The Montana Grizzlies are back on top.

Montana took over the top spot in the Division I-AA football poll, released by The Sports Network on Monday. It's the first time the Griz have topped the poll since early November, 2002, when their 24-game winning streak was snapped against Eastern Washington in Spokane.

Big Sky favorite Montana (2-0), coming off a 41-23 victory over Hofstra last Saturday in Missoula, received 61 first-place votes and 2,492 points in balloting by media members and sports information directors.

It marked the second straight week UM defeated a team from the Atlantic 10 Conference, following a 27-20 home win over Maine.

Montana faces its first road test Saturday, squaring off against Sam Houston State (1-1) in Huntsville, Texas. Kickoff is 6:05 p.m., MDT, with television coverage on KECI.

The Griz leaped past Southern Illinois, which fell one notch to second following a 23-22 loss to Division I-A Northern Illinois. The Salukis (1-1) received 26 first-place votes and 2,340 points.

Rounding out the top five were Wofford (1-0), Furman (2-0) and Villanova (2-0). Defending national champ Delaware (1-1) was sixth, followed by Northern Iowa (1-1), Georgia Southern (1-1), Massachusetts (2-0) and New Hampshire (2-0).

I-AA.org All-Stars This Week 09/11/04

http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=60463

Jefferson Heidelberger: Sr., Montana, WR
Martin Hankins: So., Southeastern Louisiana, QB
Allante Harrison: Jr., Towson, DB
Ricky Santos: Fr., New Hampshire, QB
Kevin Talley: Sr., Norfolk State, LB

* Jefferson Heidelberger, 5-9, 175, Senior, Wide Receiver/Kick Returner, Montana vs Hofstra, Nevada City, Ca.

Heidelberger broke open a 41-23 victory for Montana against Hofstra in the fourth quarter with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on Saturday afternoon in Missoula, Mont. The return was the fourth longest in Grizzly history and was the second kickoff return for a touchdown by the speedy senior. Heidelberger also had a 96-yard TD return against Northwestern State in a 2002 first-round playoff victory. He finished with 114 yards on two returns to earn Big Sky Conference special teams player of the week honors and added a career-high 12 catches for 147 yards and two rushing attempts for 10 yards against Hofstra. He finished the day with 271 all-purpose yards, an average of 16.94 yards for 16 plays. After two weeks, Heidelberger leads the passing-happy BSC with 19 receptions and 262 receiving yards.

* Martin Hankins, 6-0, 205, Sophomore, Quarterback, Southeastern Louisiana vs McNeese State, Hattiesburg, Miss.

Hankins led Southeastern Louisiana to a shocking 51-17 victory over McNeese State Saturday night by completing 38-of-54 passes for 439 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. With SLU ahead 16-14 at halftime, Hankins fired four touchdown passes in the second half as the Lions won their first road game since 1984 and handed McNeese State its worst home loss of the I-AA era. It was the most points scored against the Cowboys since 1954. Hankins threw scoring strikes of four, 53, one, 15 and two yards. His favorite target was wide receiver Felton Huggins, who had 13 catches for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Hankins set an NCAA record with 592 passes last season as he helped SLU resurrect its football program, which had been discontinued in 1985. Hankins had been named The Sports Network offensive player of the week last week after throwing for 588 yards (30-of-41 passing for four TDs) against Division II Arkansas-Monticello in the season opener.

No. 1 coming to town

The Huntsville Item

http://www.itemonline.com/articles/2004/09/14/sports/todays_sp orts/sports02.txt

Saturday's game against Montana will mark the seventh time in school history that the Sam Houston State Bearkats will play the No. 1 team in the land.

Montana moved into the No. 1 spot this week in the Sports Network Division I-AA polls, thanks to a 41-23 win against Hofstra and a Southern Illinois 23-22 loss at Northern Illinois. The Grizzlies beat Maine in the season opener and was ranked No. 1 last on Nov. 11, 2002.

The contest marks the 19th time the Bearkats have played against a top-five ranked national power. SHSU's last game against a No. 1 team was last year's 56-37 loss to Mc Neese State in Lake Charles, La.

Sam Houston State's two highest ranking victories were over teams ranked fourth nationally, as the Kats defeated Nicholls State in 1986 and Stephen F. Austin in 1996. The third highest-ranked opponent to fall to the Kats was once again SFA who was No. 7 when they traveled to Bowers Stadium in 1997. Sam Houston sent the Lumberjacks back to Nacogdoches with a 33-28 victory.

The Bearkats have also posted two wins over No. 12s, four over No. 15s, one over an 18, two over 19s and one against a 24 and a 25.

Bobcats not worried about lack of offense

By RIAL CUMMINGS of the Missoulian

http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2004/09/14/sports/sports02. txt

Montana State's offense struggled last Saturday in a 19-0 season-opening football win over Division II Adams State, but on a day when Big Sky teams were a combined 2-5, just coming out on the right side of the scoreboard was encouraging enough.

"We'll be a championship-caliber team in November, no question," MSU coach Mike Kramer told the Great Falls Tribune. "The key is that defensively we have such a great legacy and great depth ... And offensively, we have always been a late finisher."

Despite the loss of All-America safety Kane Ioane, cornerback Joey Thomas - now with the Green Bay Packers - and linemen Adam Cordeiro and Jon Montoya, MSU has a chance to be the Big Sky's best statistical defense for the third straight year. MSU blocked two field-goal tries, returned an interception for a touchdown and allowed the visitors from Alamosa, Colo., just 11 first downs and 218 total yards. It was the Bobcats' first opening-game shutout since 1965.

Adams State outgained the Cats 143-3 (that's right, just 3 yards) in the first quarter, yet trailed 6-0, courtesy of MSU sophomore safety Ryan Force's 57-yard interception return for a TD. Adams State later wasted a long drive, failing to convert on fourth-and-goal from the Bobcat 2-yard line.

"We adjusted well to what they were doing and had a good day," said standout linebacker Roger Cooper, who had five tackles, blocked a field-goal try, and caught a 15-yard pass from Travis Lulay in punt formation to set up the TD that made it 12-0 at halftime. "We played solid, fundamental defense. The game plan worked."

The Bobcat offense, which is breaking in new running backs and receivers, sputtered most of the day. Lulay, who led MSU to a share of the Big Sky title the past two seasons, was just 14 of 39 passing for 176 yards, and didn't complete a pass until six minutes before halftime. Junior halfback Justin Domineck rushed for 78 yards in his Bobcat debut.

"On offense, I'd give us about a D," Lulay said. "We're a lot better than we played today and we know that. This type of performance is going to fuel us to go out and get better."

Lulay wasn't the only veteran Big Sky quarterback to struggle on Saturday.

Senior Mark Hetherington had a nightmare game as Cal Poly prevailed 35-20 over Idaho State (0-2), snapping the Bengals' two-year, 12-game winning streak in Pocatello. Hetherington threw four interceptions and lost a pair of fumbles. Two of the interceptions were returned for TDs, and one of the fumbles was recovered in the end zone for a third score.
