Griz, Cats continue to walk a fine line

Those cardiac conference cousins of the Big Sky were at it again on
Saturday.
First, Montana State made a last ditch touchdown drive to tie its game with
Portland State and eventually win in overtime, then Montana blocked a field
goal to keep its game with Eastern Washington from going into overtime.
Helena's Shane MacIntyre did the trick this time for the Grizzlies as he
laid his body out to reject EWU's 28-yard attempt in preserving UM's 31-28
win. Montana won last week when Jonny Varona blocked an Idaho State field
goal in 24-22 win.
The seesaw battle had the Grizzlies trailing 10-0 in the first quarter,
leading 21-13 in the second half, tied at 21, then leading 31-21 late in the
fourth quarter before EWU scored and then went for the tie.
The Bobcats game had a comeback within the comeback as quarterback Travis
Lulay looked lost for the afternoon after taking a severe blow to the head
in the second quarter. After team doctors checked him out at halftime he
came back in the second half and threw for a whopping 292 yards in the
second half and overtime alone.
Last week MSU trailed 17-0 in the third quarter before scoring 20 unanswered
points, including E.J. Cochrane's game-winning 44-yard field goal as time
ran out.
MSU trailed 14-3 at halftime and 21-10 in the second half on Saturday, in a
game between the top two defenses in the league. Justin Domineck drove
across the goal line as time expired to send the game to overtime. The
Bobcats finished with 471 yards to 386 for the Vikings.
Domineck and UM's Lex Hilliard both ran for three touchdown runs. Hillard's
were from the 16, eight and two-yard lines, while Domineck's came from
three, one and 17 yards.
The wins move UM and MSU into a first place tie in the league standings at
3-0. The Bobcats are 4-2 overall, while the Grizzlies stand at 6-1. Eastern
Washington fell into second place at 3-1 in the league.
In other Big Sky action, Sacramento State ended a long scoring drought in
fine fashion, posting a 31-12 win over winless Weber State.
The Hornets got 114 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns from Tyronne
Gross and the defense harassed WSU quarterback Kyle Bauer into a sour
12-for-37, 155 yard, four interception day.
Northern Arizona got back in the win column in a non-conference game against
Division II Western New Mexico. The Lumberjacks' 34-14 win comes on the
heels of a tough 45-14 loss last week to Eastern Washington.
NAU built a 34-6 lead after three quarters behind the passing of Jason
Murietta, who threw for four TDs, and the running of Roger Robinson. NAU may
have made the game more of a romp had it not committed 14 penalties for 136
yards. It finished with 414 yards of total offense and forced four
turnovers.
Idaho State did not play this week. Next week is a bit of a slow one for the
state's Big Sky teams. The Bobcats host a non-conference game against South
Dakota State, while the Grizzlies are idle. Eastern Washington is at Weber
State, Sacramento State is at Idaho State, and Northern Arizona hosts
Portland State.

This week's top 10:
-- 2. College football IV. Like their cross-state brethren, the Montana
Grizzlies have taken to waiting until the end of games to win, hanging on to
beat Eastern Washington yesterday.
The only difference is the Griz are making defensive stops to preserve wins
while the Bobcats are snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with
comebacks.
Just one more road trip for the Griz -- at Portland State after next week's
bye -- then three straight at Washington Grizzly to close out the season.
-- 5. College football III. I think we've now entered a phase for Montana
State where they are going to either win or lose the rest of their games by
the slimmest of margins. Three weeks in a row now the Bobcats have pulled
off come-from-behind wins.
It has to be more than a little maddening for all involved -- why can't the
'Cats play the entire game like they do the fourth quarter when they're
fighting their way back?
Either way, MSU is still perfect in conference play (as is Montana, more on
that later), and that end-of-the-season game in Missoula is starting to look
like it will again have more than state pride on the line.

Dave leads Lions to win
Associate Press, Great Falls Tribune

MONTREAL — Great Falls native Dave Dickenson came off the bench to hit Chris
Brazzell for a touchdown pass with 47 seconds to play as the B.C. Lions
defeated the Montreal Alouettes 32-29 on a wet Sunday afternoon.
Dickenson, who entered the game after starter Casey Printers was hurt 6:27
into the fourth quarter, waited for the Montreal blitz to come and floated a
pass over the middle that Brazzell ran in untouched for a 15-yard TD.
The victory clinched first place and a bye into the CFL West Division final
for 11-5 B.C.
Dickenson made his return a week ago after undergoing knee surgery in July,
his third procedure since December.
Montreal, assured of first place in the East when Toronto lost to Calgary on
Saturday, lost a third game in a row. The Alouettes also ended an eight-game
winning streak at home.
A Printers fumble set up a 38-yard field goal by Matt Kellett to give
Montreal a 29-25 lead 5:42 into the fourth quarter.
Printers left on B.C.'s next possession when he was hit hard while throwing
a pass by Ed Philion.
A five-yard touchdown run by Antonio Warren at 14:42 of the third quarter —
set up by a 60-yard romp by Jason Clermont — brought the Lions to within one
point of Montreal at 26-25 to set up a nervy final quarter on the wet field.
Sylvain Girard had scored for Montreal on a 46-yard TD reception at 12:41 of
the third.
Autry Denson and Kwame Cavil also had TDs and Matt Kellet three field goals
for Montreal while Ryan Thelwell and Printers scored and Duncan O'Mahony had
a field goal for B.C.
The crowd of 20,202 — Montreal's 54th straight sellout — saw an error-filled
game with 10 fumbles as players struggled to hang onto the ball in the cold
rain.
The Alouettes lost veteran centre Brian Chiu to a high ankle sprain on the
first play from scrimmage.
Montreal jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and then saw B.C.
score 15 unanswered points in the second.
After a pair of Matt Kellett field goals, a 79-yard punt return by Ezra
Landry set up Denson's one-yard TD plunge at 11:19. Cavil scored on a
60-yard catch and run at 14:05.
Printers began to find his range in the second quarter, hitting Thelwell for
a 10-yard TD pass at 2:11. After collecting two points on a safety, Printers
finished a drive himself with a one-yard TD run at 12:36. However, a bad
snap spoiled the convert attempt.
