The Kral Ferch dunk is on Youtube and is worth a look...
What a trip down memory lane thinking about a few of those Plains teams... They won a divisional (not a district) playoff game by 100 points...
Pilgrim was a good dunker on those teams but they had another kid who's name escapes me who get get his head above the rim but played very little. I think they had about 9-10 decent dunkers that year.
Reich from Hot Springs did not dunk on us in any games but I always wondered what he could have done.
Even though not a native Montanan... I always liked Kevin Kearney as a very modest size post he dunked a ton and always make it look so easy... He seemed to be only 6' 3" or so.
Todd Reich of Hot Springs in the late 80's was quite an athlete. I never seen him play, but am thinking he should have been quite a dunker. Anyone recall if he was or not? I left the area and did not follow Hot Springs after that.
I thought the BigFork and Corvallis teams of the mid to late 80's had few dunkers on them. Cannot remember names though.
Bigfork had a couple teams in the 80's where nearly the entire lineup could dunk. The ones that stood out were Auer, Hals, and Edwards. Auer was recruited by the Griz and played one year before letting his lust for social life interfere and he was sent packing. Hals and Edwards went to JC's.
Montanamike I think that was Stang and he would have either been a sophomore or freshman that year.
We played Plains at state in 1987 and Stang was not on the roster. The sophomores on that team were shane moss, derek vonheeder and shane browning. Royce Johnston and Matt Deihl may have been on the roster as Frosh.

Hopkins is at Rocky. He should do very well there. He was a tweener kid, great kid to be around, not sure he had the athleticism to play on the perimeter at the D1 level. Might have, he did get looks, but nothing that really materialized.
My vote is for Tuff Harris. Not for in air grace, but for the same reason that Sam Riddle is on the list. For a 6-0 kid (on a good day) saw him almost completely paralell in the all star tournament for seniors (Radisson) in Billings.

For the record Crothers wasn't dunking in Middle School or High school. I grew up in Helena and in Junior High Greg was pigeon toed and an average hoop talent. He really didn't hit his great athletic ability until the end of his freshman year. By the time he was a senior he could dunk sometimes in lay-up drills in practice but, he never threw one down in a game. His brother was a d1 talent but, had a lot discipline problems that didn't help matters. His brother now he had mad hops. When it comes to football I've never seen a player bring the lumber or thunder like Crothers did, holy crap he could hit.
Inaccurate, ask someone who played for Big Sky at the time if he could dunk.

hasn't Camel been beating Riddle almost regularly in the dunk contests at the summer 3-on-3 tourneys? I seem to recall them going head-to-head at least twice... with Camel winning both.
Could be wrong, just seems I've heard or read as much.

When Plains a district tourney game by a 100 that was Royce's senior and Stang was on the team then. 87 he wasn't but the only guys who dunk on the 87 team were Pilgrim, Hellickson, Browning, Olson, and Bunch. Diehl wasn't on tha team either because, he was only a year ahead of Stang.

Well I'm related to Kevin McCutcheon and he played with Greg in JH and HS and we went to all their games and I don't recall him every throwing one down. I live in the Flathead now so the next time I see Shawn Tucker I'll ask him if it happened. He knows a lot about Big Sky hoops so maybe he'll know.
Nick Dissly from Bozeman was definitely the best dunker in the state in the past ten years. Luedtke was very good, and definitely put on a good show pregame, but Dissly was a better power dunker by just going over the top of everyone.
Chris Mosbacher from Sentinel had some good dunks, beat Tuff Harris in the senior slam dunk contest, and wins periodically at Polson. Jordan Hasquet did not have fancy dunks for Sentinel, but sure hammered a few in his day.
Carothers could muscle his way around the court as good as anyone, but I personally have never seen him dunk in a game. He played such physical defense, that he took a lot of people out of their games.

Another stubborn egrizzer newbie thinks he has it all. Ask Kevin, ask Sean, it really doesn't matter. Just FYI, name dropping does not really impress anyone on egriz. By the way, how are the brothers doing?
Hmmmm, how about Mandy's brothers? At least I assume they are her brothers, the Morales boys out of Huntley? I know they dominated many HS games and imagine they could throw it down when the time came.
Thank you That was great. Wow, that sure brought back memories of how good the Ferch brothers really were. Take a look at those dunks. I think that solidfies the best Montanan dunker ever. Kral hands down. Can we bring back that type of athleticism to the BSC? or the GRIZ?
BTW, one of those dunks appeared to be Tinkle harmlessly watching.

I forgot how high those guys could get up. I've heard from people at Gonzaga that Shan? plays with the GU players at open gym in the off-season and can still tear it up. What SI issue was it that a picture and article on Kral?

I'm pretty sure it was the 1986/1987 SI College Hoops special. The article showed Kral dunking on an outdoor hoop (blur motion effect so it looked like 5 Kral's) and said something to the affect......even without his brother Shan, Kral Ferch is quite an eyeful. The article also went on to talk about the Big Sky's experiment with the 3 point line in the previous season and how the Bobcats with Ferch, Ferch and Domako were primed to take advatage of the 3, since the NCAA decided to adopt it nation wide. I think I might still have that issue in my attic.
