Dlouhy is the best jumper I've seen in this state for some time now. He's not a Montanan though.
A few of the best homegrown Montana boys who could flat out leap;
J.R. Camel--everyone has their own mythical Camel story, he had great bounce, could high jump 7 feet!!!
Sam Riddle--Sam could get up and 360 dunk very easily, he barely cracks 6 feet on the measuring stick.
Gem Toosaint--Gem may have been the most underrated athlete to come out of Missoula. Played at Loyola, around '02, he went between the legs and dunked once at a dunk contest.
Nick Dissly--had the best high school dunk I've ever seen, thats including those McDonald's All-Americans
Jack MacGillis--haven't seen anyone with as many dunks as him in games since Camel.
Matt Ludke--Ronan native who could absolutely fly, not very tall either, could shoot the rock too, I think he could have developed into a very good Grizzly
Mike Chavez was pretty good, so was the Iverson kid out of Winnett.
Hands down the best i've seen is Nick Dissly, I went to a couple camps with this kid, and he is a rediculous dunker. He can pull things off that nobody his size should. I'd like to see him in a national dunk competitiion, I think he could dunk with anybody. Much better than Dlouhy.

I have a name that will become familiar to most in Western Montana over the next two years... Evan Hopkins from Thompson Falls. As a Freshman he could 360 dunk...He is about 6-5 as a sophomore and I imagine that he might have a few colleges after him...
Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teaches our children”

From Montana: Kral Ferch his dunk over St. John's Willie Glass in the NCAA tourney.....CLasssssssssssssssic. end of discussion.
Best dunker who played for Montana... (MAN name just excaped me ) First name was Herb played one year before being killed in a auto accident (want to say Williams but thats not it)

My vote goes to Matt Luedtke, for being 6'1" he's got some amazing hops. He won every 3 on 3 tournament dunk contest this past summer and will this following summer. J.R Camel wasn't too shabby either.

Is J.R. Camel related to that professional cruiserweight boxer from Butte years ago? I can't remember his first name, but I'm pretty sure his last name was Camel. Not a very common name.

Does anybody know?
EDIT - Was it Marvin Camel?
YES.
If I remember right he is a nephew.
Or was he a son.
Marvin was at most if not all of J.R.' s games at Hellgate and as a Griz.

I relaize this is hard to belive because of their huge difference in age but if I rember correctly J.R. and Marvin Camel are half brothers. They are from St. Ignitus. I lived there for sometime and I have many family members that have lived in that area for many years. The Salish and Kootine tribes seem to hold them both in high regard. Mavin Camel was the World Criusier weight champion for a short time and the last time I heard anything about him he was training young boxers in Butte.
As for J.R. Camel after he left UM he attended Salish Kootnie College in Pablo and actully played for their basket ball team for a couple of seasons. They play in a league that plays aginst other Reservations college teams. The last time I actually saw him was in Ronan at bowling center just before I moved to Florida.
ryan leaf could flat out dunk on anybody and do any kind of dunk. lets not forget he was offered to play bball at several colleges and actually made the team at wazzu, but didn't play. ferch, camel, and leaf are by far the best dunkers ever.
that toussaint kid i think is in polson i think i've seen him in the wolf den a couple of times and yes marvin and jr are half brothers....
but by far the best dunker in the state has been luedtke he's 6'1" and dunks on huge guys and jumps over 6'8" people stacked in front of one another as his finale for contests who really else has done that and then when camel and luedtke play on the same team they are unstoppable
on another note another really untalked about leaper that before he blew his knee out was probably more explosive and a better leaper than luedtke was Jim Stergar out of Anaconda and was Luedtke's high school coach, he could leap out of the gym even into his 30's
Jim Stergar-6'
Jake Larson-6' (Butte High, track at UM, football at Western)
Ryan Wetzel-6'3"? (Billings Central...awesome dunker)
Matt Seidensticker -(Shelby, UM...tons of great traffic dunks in HS)
Dissly - saw him convert 3 lobs in state semi's (I believe). One of the lobs he adlib'd and threw it down behind his head.
When Jim Stergar played at Western he was a phenominal dunker in contests...games? Not so much....it involved stepping inside the 3pt line.
