Wa-Griz vs Autzen Stadium: Which is louder?

I'd be interested to hear from someone who has taken in games at both venues.

Both stadiums are built very similar. I think that with there bigger crowd and the fact that even though they don't have a track but it is not as close to the teams (there is probably 5-10 yards on each side more than our's. Considering this we are louder because of our fans.

I've never taken in a game at Autzen, but I've been to many loud stadiums, including Mile High and the Metrodome. Wash-Griz is as loud as those two. I think more fans per capita actually get up and yell at Wash-Griz than any stadium I've ever been to.

The only time I have been to Autzen was when the Griz played there in 93. The only thing I really remember about it was both ends were completely empty and it was a pretty relaxed and quiet crowd, especially when the Griz came back in the second half down something like 35-7 to end the game 35-30. However, I think Oregon played pretty much 2nd and 3rd stringers the entire second half. I don't believe Dickenson even played until the 2nd half, that is where he won his starting job. Like I said, it was only about 3/4 full (if that) and did not really impress me much. Then again, in 93 Washington Grizzly Stadium atmosphere was not very impressive either.

I have been to a game at Autzen in '03 when the Ducks beat my Wolverines and while the crowd was loud I don't think it was as loud as Wa Griz. A lot of that could have to do with the configuration of the stadium because their crowd was definetly into it. Also the atmosphere wasn't the same. The didn't have anything like Cotton Eye joe or raise a little hell to get the crowd sky high after a big play. Overall i would take our venue anyday.

Autzen, though I wouldn't consider any of the Pac-10 stadium to be loud (Autzen, Reser, Martin and Husky) compared to other college stadiums I have been to. Wa-Griz is loud for 22000 but I don't care how it is constructed if the stands are full it will be loud.

I have been to a few big venues including Notre Dame Stadium and two Fiesta Bowls, I guarantee that Washington Griz is just as loud as any of them. As was posted earlier, even though Washington Griz has less people than these other places, I really think a larger majority of our fans get into it. While seeing a game at Notre Dame Stadium was a unique experience with 80,000 fans, I think that Washington Griz Stadium was probably louder. However, the game day experience at Notre Dame was unreal. That is one large tailgate party.

I did the Wazzu, Stanford, Cal and Oregon State games in 2003 at Autzen. When the crowd is really into the game, Autzen gets loud. For example, when the Ducks did a goal line stance against Stanford, or during the fourth quarter comeback against Cal.
However, most of the time, the students are the only ones making any noise at Autzen, but most of the fans make noise at Washington Grizzly. Washington Grizzly is loud whenever the Griz are on defense. So, Washington Grizzly gets the nod for louder stadium.

WaGriz is a great place. I have been to some other places that remind me of WaGriz, only there are a lot more people at these other games. Notre Dame Stadium is good, and Falcon Stadium @ Air Force is another great place. Probably the loudest i've been to was the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game at Michigan Stadium. I was in the middle of the Michigan student section wearing my kelly green Irish shirt. It was crazy, but made me think of WaGriz!!!

per capita griz by far, took in a uof o game in 04 and it was really deafening. The ducks sucked this year. I really think autzen is louder than wa griz. I have been on the sideline of both so just my thought.

I love both stadiums. WA-GRIZ is very loud I would say more often during the game than Autzen. However last year I was at Autzen when they played Arizona. Ducks fumbled the ball on the 3 and backer picked the ball up and ran it 97 for a TD. When replayed on screen people went crazy and Arizona was down. TD was taken away and Cats took over on the 3. It got loud very loud and on 3rd down the noise was so lound your chest vibrated. It was pretty awsome. I think if we stand tall with the Ducks it will be a noise fest on both sides. I can not wait. I will say that WA-GRIZ and Autzen blow Reser out of the water. I was at the fog bowl (USC was in town) Pretty loud at time both nothing like WA-GRIZ. I love football!!

You'd have to ask the players after the game. They are the best judge since each fan has other yelling fans around them that distort the noise factor. Both are loud although Autzen is not as loud as it was before they expanded 3 years ago. Strange but true.

I'd give a slight edge to WA-Griz because the stands are steeper and it holds the noise better. Those that go to the game this fall will notice that Autzen is a more gradual slope. Neither stadium has a track which is the major reason both get so loud. Apposed to Husky Stadium where the fans are a good 50 feet or more from the playing surface.

Autzen is as loud as it gets

Postby HuskiesSuck » Thu Jan 27, 2005 10:04 pm

Never been to a game in Montana, but I think it's safe to say that Autzen stadium is much louder. I think that Autzen was even louder before the expansion, but even with the expansion it's regarded as one of the loudest stadiums in the country. Back in 2000 when college gameday came to Eugene, Chris Fowler and Lee Corso mentioned that Autzen was the loudest stadium in the country (louder than Neyland, the Swamp, the shoe, etc.) Don't have the quote on me but Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said Autzen stadium was the loudest stadium he'd ever been in. Here's a quote from the Michigan Daily, 9/03-

"Autzen's 59,000 strong make the Big House [Michigan] collectively sound like a pathetic wimper. It's louder than 'The Swamp' at Florida, 'The Shoe' in Columbus and 'Death Valley' at Louisiana State. Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die."

Autzen hasn't constantly been as loud of a stadium as it used to be, but I think some of that is with the frustration of the fans, and the fact that there wasn't much to cheer for this year. However, the Michigan and Arizona games are proof that the fans can still make Autzen into a very loud stadium. And the noise isn't just in the student section, I sit in one of the donor sections and it is just as loud there, as it is anywhere else in the stadium.

Think I am going to have to go along with Lloyd Carr, someone who has been on the field. I went to a Duck/Fusky game a few years back and I don't remember any other stadium I have watched a game get that loud. WA-Griz is an awesome experience because the fans are in the game from kickoff until after the ass whoppin' is done. But if the fans at Autzen are into the game, we are a red-headed step child. I am not sure if it was the booze, but it felt like the stands were shaking, hard to do considering they are built like the sideline stands at WA-Griz.

The fans at Autzen are louder during big games. The only time Oregon fans are loud is when the team is doing well, and it is a rival or a top 25 team. In 2001 that stadium was crazy. Washington-Grizzly is more consistant than Autzen, but to be fair, Montana fans have a lot more to cheer about on a consistent basis.

With the students not back on campus and the townspeople probably feeling pretty blase' (see ho hum) about playing a 1-AA Griz team, I suspect that much of the noise will come from the 4,000 to 7,000 Montana fans in attendance....Air Force , with most of the stands backed into the Front Range mountains, is okay on the noise scale, but what they have that noooobody else has is the greatest flyovers you'll ever want to see. Up to a dozen planes of all kinds capped by F-16's roaring in overhead at an elevation you won't see premitted at any other college stadium.

B.S. ask ESPN, and everyone that has ever been to Wash-Griz. People don't realize how loud it is untill they experience it, and unless they've been here they always underestimate it. I would say Autzen can get louder, but to say Autzen is much louder I can guarantee is false.

Wa-Griz is a loud stadium and when I was there it was before the latest expansion.....per people it is loud and a great atmosphere....I would rank it right up there with Michigan Stadium ........Michigan Stadium is great because when you walk up to it you are thinking this aint the Big House....then you walk through the tunnel and the stands are a mile down into the ground.....
