Dane Oliver Named Sentinel Head Coach

Former Griz receiver Dane Oliver is apparently the new Missoula Sentinel head football coach. No surprise. Good choice. He's been an assistant and the OC for years.

Missoula needs to field one 1AA team its the only way they will ever have a chance to compete with any of the other programs in the state.

Kids are raised way to soft in Zoo town.

Being competitive in team sports is not a priority in Missoula. Participation is the only thing that matters. Part of the liberal soccer Mom mentality in Missoula. Little Grizzly Football is the worst youth sports program I have ever been around. Watching the best little grizzly team play against the worst little guy team in Billings would be hilarious. Add that there is no Football programs in Missoula Middle Schools and you have a bunch of kids who are just learning actual defensive schemes (ya know, ones that allow blitzing) when they enter high school. Not to mention finally running an offense that isn't a bastardized version of the Wing T.

I've been told that most of the High School sports programs don't even have strength and conditioning programs, kids have to work out on their own. Don't know if this is true. Really hard to believe in 2012

No kidding. I think football starts in 4th or 5th grade here in Helena.

No they don't. Middle Schoolers can continue playing Little Grizzly under the same rules they have for 4th and 5th graders, which includes no blitzing and requires every team to run the exact same offense from the exact same playbook. I helped coach a 7th and 8th grade team about 6 years ago.

Not only that, but the "Powers that Be" in the Little Griz program absolutely refuse to consider a geographical boundary or school affiliated boundary for teams. The 3-4 guys in charge insist on a city wide arrangement.

The result is that NO teams end up learning/running the offense they will run in high school. They don't play with the team-mates they will have in high school. The high school coaches are so frustrated with it, they have offered to help, and were basically told no. It is a joke. So glad my kids are done with it.

I keep hearing rumors of an alternate league forming, but don't know where that is at. I know if another one formed, it would be popular.

Glad to see Dane at Sentinel. I think he will do a good job. Not as much of a PR guy as Joseph, but knows football. It will be interesting to see who his DC is.

And that right there is probably the worst part. Contrast that with Billings where West High, Senior, and Skyview kids play together since they are in 4th grade. Big Timber used to have a team and prob still do. and I think Huntley and some of the other smaller towns are getting their kids in the league.

It's so sad. I have great memories playing at Lewis & Clark Middle Schools against rival schools like Will James. That is where the big high school rivalries start to form. I'm sure the same is true in Helena and Great Falls.

Nice to see that nothing has changed in Little Grizzly football since I played 37 years ago.

I grew up in Laurel. Played flag in 4th grade. Played little guy tackle football in Billings in 5-6 grade. Then played middle school football vs all the other Eastern A schools and a few Billings schools (?). I know Missoula has little guy tackle football for like 5-6 grade. Really weird to not have middle school football.

Basketball, track, wrestling, volleyball and soccer. I believe all sports are no-cut, however.

WaGriz, what year did you play at Lewis and Clark? Those games against Will James were some of my favorite memories as well.

It would have been about 2000-2001. I'm pretty young.
