North Dakota starts to pay for their nickname

Definitely need to get rid of it. The whole petition was dumb and I am disappointed so many people signed it. They just do not realize the harm it can do to the university and it's athletics.

Our former coach, Dale Lennon (Southern Illinois coach), said that he has witnessed first hand that it has already hurt our recruiting. It really is unfortunate but hopefully it will be solved soon but I doubt it.
 
They should just rename to North Dakota Warriors or something... Why does it have to be Native...?

They'd still have to change the logo. They aren't allowed to have any Native imagery without the approval.
 
I'm always blown away that Indians have a problem with sports names (I know several Indians who think its trivial) these are good hard working farming Indians on the Highline who are kind enough to let me hunt their land.

I mean as far as I'm concerned the names were taken in honor. I think some minority groups just like to make white people squirm on race issues. No kidding, look how many times African Americans have demanded name changes when you want to reference them as a group. Colored to Negro, Nergro to Black, Black to African American and now back to Black for some African Americans. Yep some of them now do not like African American any longer. Its nuts, I'm not offended by the Minnesota Viking. Hypersensitivity at its finest or just loving to make white people squirm with political correctness?
 
I have no problem with the name, but the NCAA does. Should just change it and logo and get the bullshit over with.

I grant Indians some complaint leeway in regards to teams with goofy cartoon like caricatures such as the Cleveland Indians or a name like Redskins but something like the Fighting Sioux with a proud strong logo is fine in my book.
 
I disagree w/ them "having" to get rid of their name/logo but it's beyond time to move on. The University/Alum should be "proud" to do "what's right" and move on, swiftly, on getting the change done. "It" won't go away until it's done.

If you look at the Cleveland Indians and Redskins, I can totally see how some Native's would be offended. Also, I believe Sioux means "Snake" as in a derogatory meaning.
 
I am with Savage on this one. I do not see how Fighting Sioux is any more derogatory than the Fighting Irish is. I sometimes think people look for ways for their feelings to be hurt. I understand how the name "Redskins" could be offensive, but not this one.

That said, it seems that they are just making more trouble for themselves, and even if they won a court battle to keep it, the problem would remain. Probably time to accept it and move on.

I don't think many people care. It's the NCAA, that does care. And what kind of name would offend white people? The fighting crackers?
