Tweet no more, Griz Football bans Twitter

In a somewhat shocking yet completely understandable action, the Montana Grizzly Football players are no longer allowed to use Twitter while a member of the team. The source of the banning isn’t quite clear as I’ve heard rumors that it was the coaches decision as well as rumors that it was a collective decision of the Seniors on the football team.

Good call in my opinion. New social media can cause problems and I think this is a coaching staff looking of ways to help support the players.

I'm pretty active on twitter with my updates and will interact with a few guys via twitter - IMO this really only impacts... 15 guys tops that use twitter a lot. However for a handful of them that'll be tough .

Looking back there was the time when NBC Montana was posting Tru's timeline as an indication of guilt in the tazing/arrest issue. I recall someone posting a Tyrone Duncan tweet about JJ when the restraining order was originally filed. For the sake of keeping a lid on communications the team cannot control that could be linked back and mis-contrued by the public - this makes sense. I can imagine about 6 or 7 guys that'll miss their twitter accounts though.

A novel idea would be to try working for a change, and you would have no time to tweet

G1 the resident D-bag makes an appearance! Take a bow Steve and thanks for stopping in!

You forgot, "Yo numbnuts, you post more useless shit on egriz than I post on twitter!"

I posted this in the actual blog but since nobody reads that I will write it in here as well.

"While I do believe this is a good idea and can’t hurt, it won’t completely fix the bigger issues that are facing the team and university. There still is a lot to be done to get the ship righted but this may be a step in the right direction to install more discipline within the program. If the banning of twitter was a team decision, than I will be much happier with it because it shows the team is taking this seriously."

As BW said, this won't affect too many players. Biggest tweeters were Seniors last year.

I wouldn't necessarily argue it has anything to do with the recent state of Montana football. Every college team should mandate something like this...

Twitter single-handedly cost Lehigh a chance in the playoffs

I assume this is just an "in-season" thing, as there are still players (who I believe are still on the team) still tweeting.

@the_realgk17 has 50+ tweets in the last 24 hours. Just think how good he would be if his arm was as busy as this thumbs.

The decision was made yesterday and isn't being enforced yet. Why are you following a rival football player anyways?

;)

I'm not even on twitter. I just googled 5 griz players who I assumed were big tweeps, and 3 of the 5 were still active on twitter. gk17 was by far the most active.

Out of curiosity, how is this going to be enforced? I assume this isn't a student conduct code thing, so it seems there will be lots of grey area.

GK does enjoy his twitter. But during football season he rarely used it. Like I said the rule has not been enforced yet. I don't know for certain but I'm guessing it won't be enforced until fall camp starts up???

And good question on the enforcing aspect of it. I'm guessing, just like you found out, that a coach or someone in authority will check twitter every week or so once the rule goes into affect. If a player is found tweeting the first time will probably involve some sort of extra conditioning. After that I'm not sure of what the plan would be. Hopefully the players take this seriously and we won't have to worry about it. IMO, if a player has to be told twice not to use something as trivial as twitter, than that player is not buying into the program.

Tru and Dane Fletcher have the little blue check by their names. Thats a big deal in twitter world!

UPDATE:

Jean Gee updated me with the following information: “This decision was 100% the senior leaders of the team. Then when presented to the team, it was a very high majority (if not all) that supported it and went along willingly.”

Thanks for the clarification jean!
