The Griz are now 2-2. As many had thought - even as far back as this spring when the schedule came out. I've said that a few times this week, even with Schmaing and Poole I think that that the most likely record the Griz would have at this point was 2-2.
So how do fans feel about it? I'd say frustrated for the most part. No one in this fanbase likes to see the team lose. In both losses now we saw some similar trends. Shaky O-line play, a QB running for his life, a running game that can't get going, and a defense that plays mightily but gets worn down as the game goes on.
This loss to NDSU may have some silver lining, but the stats really won't tell that much. The Grizzlies redzone defense rose to the occasion, only allowing 1 TD in I believe 6 visits. It would've obviously been nicer to see more forced punts instead of seeing the NDSU offense time and time again get into the RZ. If it weren't for the defensive effort (and lets be honest some NDSU errors too) in the red zone this game would've been a major blow-out. However, it wasn't on the scoreboard, and until the interception in the end-zone it was feeling like the Griz had a fighting chance.
The Griz are facing 3 games now where they'll most likely be the favored team. They need to get things rolling and be ready for that trip to EWU, maybe the best offense in the FCS with maybe the best player in the FCS in Adams.
In watching this game, here's my main impressions;
1. At this point, the offensive line will continue to keep this team from getting to the next level. There's a major lack of consistency and when finally facing a top-tier defense our tackles let JJ get rocked far too often and our interior O-line once again had too many issues giving blitzers and stunt-DE's free shots. You see what this line could become, there was some good run blocking in the 3rd, some good pass protection earlier, but it just wasn't consistent and really fell apart at key times. Mostly the 3rd and goal which could've given the Griz a 14-12 lead at the half, and then pretty much the whole 2nd half and especially the 4th quarter where the Griz needed a drive but saw JJ get hit time and time and time again.
2. There were a few issues but the defense did just enough to keep the game close against an offense that is used to scoring a lot of points and piling up the yards. This wasn't some scrub offense the defense faced off against. They tackled very well with some noticeable misses. They didn't let plays get beyond them, they swarmed to the ball. The defense did have issues stopping the run in the middle of the field, I was hoping to see more from them there. Also QB pressure on passing downs really didn't happen much - which is a first for our D-line this season. While it wasn't pretty the defense did what was needed to keep the Griz in the game. Against the #1 team in the nation that's all you can ask of them.
3. An improving Ellis Henderson might be the difference maker. As he an JJ got on the same page, suddenly the offense showed some life. A deep ball to Jones as well, some nice runs by Canada. I hope Ellis wasn't hurt too bad hitting the wall there and can keep getting back to full speed. Having a playmaker at WR and two at RB will help open this offense up.
4. I was really surprised that our OT's were not given more help at key moments, especially on 3rd down.
5. Officiating was garbage, but both ways. NDSU had some drives stopped and continued some Griz drives too on borderline calls. They also missed an obvious horse-collar and allowed a crap-ton of holding on the d-ends.

So before you jump off the ledge, the Griz lost on the road to the #1 team in the nation who is one of the most dominant modern dynasties in the FCS. They were in the game for 3 quarters. Their defense did enough to keep it close. We went 1-1 on fieldgoals. The team got banged up in a physical game but there are hopefully no major/long-term injuries.
Remember back to just a few years ago, Griz fans were complaining that the Griz were booking soft OOC schedules and then were pissed when we'd drop out in the playoffs - usually blaming a soft conference and a soft OOC to not prepare the team for the post-season. Additionally we would see teams like EWU of late and App State from years before open with a few losses but find their stride and get rolling.
Now is the time to fine-tune. We're 4 games into the season and right where I personally expected this team to be. I'm not down in the dumps over this loss, in fact I'm already looking forward to seeing how this team will build from it for next week.
Safe travels home Griz and Griz Nation - we've got homecoming this next weekend, let's get after it! GO GRIZ!!!
