Wa-Griz Champions Center: 'It's on its way'

The new screen installation was most of the reason for the delay.

The signs are subtle, unless you've circled the backside of the University of Montana's campus in a low-riding vehicle in the past month. Construction on the privately funded $14 million Washington-Grizzly Champions Center project has begun.

"It's underway," Montana Athletic Director Kent Haslam said, "and you're aware if you've driven on Campus Drive through the potholes."

Work on a main power line for campus, buried along the outline of Washington-Grizzly Stadium in the university's far northeast corner, was among the initial pieces of the construction groundbreaking of the athletic department's latest jewel. With that taken care of -- underground utilities were updated and re-routed in early May -- excavation for the actual building can follow soon, Haslam said.

The Champions Center, which will house new locker rooms for the football team, as well as expansive team meeting spaces and a massive strength-and-conditioning center for use by all student-athletes, will cover 46,000 square feet on the stadium's southwest side. It was designed by Missoula-based CTA Architects.

I talked to Kent a couple of weeks ago and he said the tentative plan was that it would be completed in time for Homecoming 2017 so that the visiting alumni could see it and they could do a nice presentation during halftime to thank the Washington family and the other donors.

Hopefully it will be completed prior to that because I know originally he had hoped it would be ready for the players to be able to use the weight room next summer.

Nice Job by Otto's :thumb:

With all of this enlargement going on perhaps some of our more testy fans will be able to read the score.

Will it improve football smarts? That might be taking it to far...

Only if it's visible from the tail gates. Or in Growler's case, Seattle.

At the Griz youth Camp I also heard that there is new turf coming in about a month, it needs it. Walking on the field and looking around the very edge of the field up along the sides by the walls (not walked on) you can see just how worn out it really is.

This is going to be a pretty fancy facility when everything is in place by the end, hopefully, of next summer.

Good to hear!! I believe that will make the third turf since the original grass. If I remember right, the first turf needed to be replaced before it's useful life and was under warranty, at least that's what I recall.
How long has the current one been in place, seven years maybe?

The current turf was in place for the 2008 season, so it's been there for 8 years now.

With the new sign/screen and new turf that will give it a good face lift. When walking around the stadium without 25+ thousand screaming fans it sure does look different. It is starting to show its age a bit. Lots of cracks in the concrete over in the student section, and most all the metal hand railings and such sure could use a fresh coat of paint, hell its only money. Still the best damn venue in any condition in the FCS.
GO GRIZ

Since there has been lots of concern about the possible connection of the ground-up rubber used as a base in synthetic fields with cancer, I wonder if a different base will be used?

Lord, I hope not, as a former rugby player who had to go back to the horrible sport of soccer due to age and wear and tear, my house is usually about ankle deep in that ground up tire crap. It's like beach sand, that shit is everywhere.

Was told last evening that all of the carefully engineered and pre-fabbed superstructure for the new display turned out to be "a couple inches off," and everything had to be recut and rewelded on the spot by hand. A major headache. One of the display specialists said this has turned into one of their longest projects ever.

However, I notice that they have erected in the last couple of days a large chain link fence around the main construction area, and so it looks like they are transitioning from the "display" to "Champions Center" in the next week or so. That puts the Center about three months behind.

Oh, God I hope not.
From the category of fun things to know and tell, Boise State trademarked "non-green" football fields and anyone wishing to get one installed needs to get their permission. How in the hell can anyone trademark something like that?

I'd be skeptical of the claim. There's an overlap between patent and trademark.

"Under U.S. patent law, any person who "invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof, may obtain a patent."

"A trademark is generally a word, phrase, symbol, or design, or a combination thereof, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others."

If Boise did not actually use "Flamboyant Awful Red," for instance, they could not trademark it.

From Wikipedia (so it has to be true, right?):

Boise State holds a trademark on any non-green field, not just blue.[5] It has licensed the right to use blue fields to several high schools as well as the University of New Haven,[6] and also issues free licenses to any school or team that uses a color other than blue or orange, Boise State's school colors.[5] here's the URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_football_venues_with_non-traditional_field_colors

I guess nothing surprises me, but I doubt that it would survive a court case; and I doubt BSU would go to court if anyone did as they pleased with their field color.
