Will update this post, a few days after each Griz game

Thank you, Bertram!

Please, please, please post the Cal Poly game! My wife and I have to attend a wedding during the game, and unfortunately it is in Blozeman which is also Homecoming for State. We'll be "tailgating" at the wedding reception and ready to watch a replay of the game later that night if you have it up! :thumb:

Thanks so much for posting this. The 4th down spot against the Griz is short by about a yard from where Gus was on the push and did anybody else think there was a late hit on JLM on the far side line after a catch. Brady hits Horner on the next play so it doesn't matter but I have seen that called on Sundays.

I think Brady had the first down, but he was lost in the sea of white all bunched up there. The spot was poor, the old John Madden right/left foot job. I was hoping for ISO, but what do I know?

Both teams had to put up with some questionable calls or non-calls. UNI had the two "catches", one with the receiver clearly kneeling on the sidelines and the one Rainey had in a tweet that was dropped. There was a boatload of face-guarding on both sides. The hands to the face on Homan's catch, and the intentional grounding on Grady - hit while he was throwing, have you every seen that before? You da man Bert. Many, many thanks.

Face guarding is not illegal in college football if there is no contact before the ball arrives.

I was really hoping for a play action pass, or other type of misdirection play...something but straight ahead twice

I thought it was obvious the hit caused it. I couldn't believe the refs didn't think it themselves. UNI return game might not be so impressive without all the missed jersey grabbing. That was an awful crew.

Yes! Noticed that during the game, JLM was hit waaay out of bounds. Wasn't a hard hit but still should have been called. And as someone else pointed out, there were several calls that left you wondering what the ???

I did not know this, I was wondering on some of those plays by Markell and Sandry. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for posting. I missed the SFU game, so it was nice to see the replay. Damn, that Lorenzo is a stud! Clearly the best player on the field.

What IS supposedly illegal is a DB not turning around and making an attempt at the ball....and yet Sanders, Sandry, and both UNI CBs did it ALL. DAY. LONG. Never turned to look for the ball...just stuck their hands up and knocked it away once the receiver made a move for it. And it wasn't called once....thankfully, I guess, since two of them happened in the end zone and would have been UNI TD's otherwise.

I think you must be confused. There is nothing illegal about not turning around, so long as there is no contact. Think about it: if the DB did nothing after the snap and simply stayed at the LOS while the WR ran away and the DB turned his back to the QB, that would not be a flag. The key for the penalty is contact, not turning of the head. When the ball is in the air, the DB has as much of a right to it as the WR. If the DB turns his head to make a play on the ball, the presumption is that any contact thereafter was incidental. If he does not, and there is contact, he usually does not get that presumption from the ref. I believe for the calls you referenced, there was not substantial contact, or the ball was batted prior to contact. Thus, it doesn't matter if he turned his head or not.

Thank you for the clarification. This college rule is different from the pro rule on the same situations, right???

No, I don't think it is different. If there is contact prior to the ball arriving, you had better be making a play on the ball and not a play on the WR. That simple

If you are asking is face guarding legal in the NFL then the answer is also yes. It is only illegal in high school football:

Don't they have instant replay now in college on every play? The one that Shaun pointed out on twitter where the UNI received bobbled the ball should've been reviewed. You could clearly see it hit the ground.
