What could we do in the REDZONE??

For the last two years our red zone offense has been atrocious. I was wondering if we could switch to maybe a pro or "I" formation down there. I watched a college football game the other day and the announcers made a good point. Later in the season it is always good to have a power formation, as the injury bug and wear& tear of the defense are at their greatest. What formations and style would be compatible with Stitt's current offense. Maybe if our current scheme is not working well we could reboot into it to during the game to at least get some rhythm and keep our defense off the field? Our current "Battle Ram" formation will not do!

Give the ball to your power back and if you feel the need to throw it ONCE do it vertically and not down the line of scrimmage.

And don't ever have the worst runner on your team try to run it in.

Handicapped with no tight ends for both running and passing. Our offensive genius doesn't need them.

Hilarious thread. Montana had the SECOND BEST RED ZONE OFFENSE IN THE FUCKING CONFERENCE LAST SEASON. In fact, only EWU scored more TD's, only Idaho State scored points more frequently than did the Griz....33 TD's in 50 chances.

Oh,and before you ask....Griz were NUMBER ONE in Red Zone defense as well...

Was just going to say "didn't we have a huge improvement in red zone efficiency this last year".

I remembered we were number one in the conference for a while

Hold on for the "yeah, but they all happened against the three cupcakes" argument....

No shit, Sherlock. But the issue wasn't red zone. OP needs to find another villain.

They were maybe effective maybe from the 10+ out, but once they were inside the 7 it was pitiful to watch. Stitt's offense of throwing the ball two yards to either side or run up the center with 7 vs 5 scenario does not work well.

So we scored only 15 touchdowns in 7 of our 11 games from the redzone. So in turn we scored 18 other redzone touch downs in the other 4 games= skewed stats
Good team Redzone efficiency:
UNI 0-1
Poly 3-5
SUU 2-4
NAU 3-5
EWU 1-3
UNC 3-7
MSU 2-5 for chuckles

15/30=50% 7 games and 18/20 for 4 games

The Brady-Ram formation was truly worthless in short-yardage situations. There were @ least 20 O & D linemen sitting on the bench that Stitt could have used in a heavy package, had he so desired. But since the supposition here didn't hold up this year, just run the dam offense. 90% success rate is more than good enough.

i think the only solution to our red zone woes is to run the spider-2 Y banana:

now theres a beautiful banana.

I would have liked to see us just give it to Calhoun and let him run behind the H-back more. Especially once we are inside the 10.

Another thing that has crossed my mind was Simis. He's so athletic and strong....why not develop a package where he does some read-option stuff and we really run at the defense with him and Calhoun. Could be useful in the red zone and if we are struggling to get the pass game going. He can still throw....so if they load the box and we like a matchup with Bingham, JLM, or anyone else Makena can still get them the rock. Just thinking it could be a change of pace deal.

These make too much sense Brewskis the "The Battering Ram" formation is almost perfect, used with at least one time out prior to running it...the fake spike could be implemented to add another wrinkle that no one understands.

It reminds me of the good old days when Bobby would call a draw play on the goal line, the result...fooled no one and ended in a loss of yards.

Seems as though any change to the goal line formation would be an improvement. Maybe, focus on what his offensive philosophy is about namely to pressure defense into defending sideline to sideline.

Thanks Kemajc no tight ends or H backs or a fullback. I am tired of stats that show how good we are against shitty teams. All you guys watch every game and you know we are pathetic against decent teams in the red zone. We have 16 wide receivers that does not help us inside the 10.

I agree the red zone play calling is pathetic at times. For instance against MSU Calhoun was thumping the D so they call pass play that goes incomplete and waste a down, result, drive stopper.

I do not agree with the personnel problems. Just because a player isn't labeled a H back, full back, or TE...these guys are on the team, Bingham, Ralston, Horner and others that can play these positions. the coaches just have to be willing to use the personal on the roster better.
