1847: Fort Benton, the first permanent fort established in Montana, by Auguste Chouteau and Pierre Chouteau, Jr., as the last fur trading post on the Upper Missouri River. Purchased by the US Army in 1865 and renamed Fort Benton in honor of Senator Thomas Hart Benton.
