slang for "the big leagues." (which is what we're watching now in college basketball.) also: your big players, 6'8" or taller. the musclemen who control the paint and protect the rim. after your point guard, i think your five is the most important player on the team--a lesson hammered home again by watching the sweet 16. every team has a dominant five, kentucky and gonzaga several. the warriors are the most skilled open-court team i've seen in the nba in ages, yet everybody knows, if andrew bogut goes down, as he did last year with a broken rib, their championship hopes are dead. you gotta have that "big."
so back to us.
so far, this staff has brought in four recruits--two point guards and two threes. (unless samuelson sprouts a few more inches, i don't consider him a big.) that leaves us breuning, krslovic and boehning, all tinkle recruits. i think you need to bring in at least one big each year, for at least two reasons:
--weber has one very good big returning in bolomboy, but two young ones in the wings, zach braxton and jordon dallas (whom we recruited as well.) both have four years of eligibility, which gives weber time to recruit another one or two.
--it takes time for big players to develop. don't know why this should be, but it's a widely understood assumption among basketball experts. you don't have to hear me out yet again on how much it would have benefitted our program to have given qvale a reshirt year, as opposed to the dismal true freshman campaign he endured. (oops, i guess you just did.)
so as impressed as i've been with decuire and this staff, i'm still waiting for them to add that one critical piece to their resume: a credible big man. i'm hoping, like magicians, they've got one up their sleeve. especially watching the ncaa tournament, i think it's critical to the future success of our program.
