Huge disparity between the top and the bottom in pay, but a very large pay difference between Tinks at 178,500 and the Mountain West coaches at 440,000 - 1,200,000+ and the Pac12 from 597,000 to 2,500,000+. I know Tinks likes it here, but he won't stay much longer with this kind of a gap.

SCHOOL, CONF, HEAD COACH, SCHOOL PAY, OTHER PAY, TOTAL, PAY MAX BONUS
Montana Big Sky Wayne Tinkle $135,000 $43,500 $178,500 $146,000
New Mexico Mt. West Steve Alford $1,209,200 $38,500 $1,247,700 $655,000
San Diego State Mt. West Steve Fisher $840,000 $17,500 $857,500 $185,000
Nevada-Las Vegas Mt. West Dave Rice $765,000 $954 $765,954 $345,000
Colorado State Mt. West Larry Eustachy $500,000 $0 $500,000 $600,000

UCLA PAC-12 Ben Howland $2,200,000 $50,000 $2,250,000 $235,000
Oregon PAC-12 Dana Altman $1,800,000 $0 $1,800,000 $520,000
California PAC-12 Mike Montgomery $1,750,000 $6,500 $1,756,500 $350,000
Colorado PAC-12 Tad Boyle $591,310 $6,000 $597,310 $1,675,000

And, folks, if you want to "move up," then the salaries come with it, and Montana would have a tough time paying out that kind of money.

And, what's more, that applies to Football, Women's Bball, track and field, soccer, softball....I read that UM is trying to balance its budget and will be laying people off, and some programs have been cut...Now, I did not major in economics, but the move up thing is going to greatly increase all costs up there and for what? Montana might have natural resources and low taxes,FOR NOW, but with fewer people than Riverside County, Ca. I don't think it is going to happen. I like Tinkle and value his services to UM, but until Montana can regain what they have lost with this group in Main Hall, I doubt much will change.

Perhaps, just perhaps, Tinks values the stability of being able to stay and live in Missoula, MT as long as he wants to (ala R. Selvig) and has considered the quality of life here much more important than making a lot more money and living somewhere else with a much lower quality of life.

Maybe he has read and believes 1 Timothy 6:6.

Just a thought. Carry on.

if they close eyes and just hope for the best...yes. If they put a plan together and follow it, and it works, then it is possible. or not, but at least put a plan together and see if it is.

Agreed on WT, somebody has to pay this man and his assistants...big time.

That is a very good point by Gallatin Griz. 178K is a pretty good chunk of money, especially in Missoula. His son still has two years of high school remaining, and his children going to high school probably is a big reason he has stayed. After his son graduates he very well could decide to play for his dad, which I think certainly is a possibility.

Tinkle clearly is happy where he is at, has a fondness for UM/Missoula and wants to keep building the program. If he is not badgered by delusional fans, I could certainly see him staying in Missoula for a long time.

Look at the difficult time UCLA had in filling its head coaching vacancy. So many coaches turned them down, mainly because they were already making a lot of money, have built good programs and don't want the fishbowl feeling that is UCLA or another big-time program.

Now yes, there is a difference between 750K and 178K, and he may want to try and prove he can win at a bigger level. But money doesn't always buy happiness, especially when you already have a lot of money. As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Montana should set a goal of having the most talented and best-paid coaches in the Big Sky Conference. We've accomplished half of that goal.

Oh, I totally and completely agree with this statement, AWF. But, nonetheless, BSC salaries in no way compare with those of even the Mountain West, much less major conferences -- and I often think the 'move-up people' think that money is going to magically fall from the sky.

Agreed, '68. If UM is not willing to be competitive in our present circumstance, how in the world will we compete at a higher level?

Gonzaga had the same doubts in 1999 when they tried to keep Dan Monson, and Mark Few after that. I wonder if Boise fans wondered how they were ever going to afford to bump Hawkins from the $150k he started at in 2000 (the same year Glenn was hired for $125k) to $520k in 2005, then award that to Petersen when Hawkins left?

Follow NDSU. Give coaches a portion of the ticket sales. It is still coming out of Main Hall's pocket but what they don't see they cant spend. You could easily bump up the football staff's salary doing that and if Tinkle can continue to get butts in the seats he can increase his salary and his assistants nicely. Nothing to compare to New Mexico or UCLA but it's a good living in Missoula.

That money could fall from the sky, if Montana would get on the ball and start developing its oil & gas reserves in Eastern Montana. The region I'm working at in Oklahoma is adding 2-3 rigs a week, there is a new small boom that will soon start in northern Colorado, with at least 15-20 rigs starting up before the end of this year. As long as oil stays above $65/barrel that will be money to made, falling from the sky.

Montana needs to pursue their piece of the pie with not only the Bakken, but another new reservoir in the central part of the state.

Yeah, because Corvallis, Eugene, Greeley, etc., are such shitholes.

come on....Missoula's nice, but if you had the chance to quintuple your pay, you wouldn't take it?
