Hernon is going to UNC. He wants to stay close to home and likes the campus and our defensive line coach. Nice recruit for us. We're thin on the d line and he'll see some playing time next year, probably.

Some recruiting thoughts:

JON OPPERUD 6-7 280 OL (2 Star)
UM is the only school to offer him thus far. He however has atleast been looked at by Boise, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Oregon State.

WESTEN SUPER 6-4 270 OL (1 Star) Superior, MT
UM is the only school to show interest, I bet he has been asked to walk on or a partial scholly.

LOGAN HARRELL 6-4 273 DE (3Star)
This is a LOOOOOONNNGGG SHOT!! Offered by Fresno, Idaho, Idaho State, UNLV, WSU as well as UM. The only possative is that we were on this guy real early in the process.

40 Yards per punt in HS is pretty impressive.

I see that TE Andrei Lintz from Bellingham, WA committed to Washington State... don't know if that was pointed out, the Griz did offer him.

So the new punter is an all-state QB that is a state contender in the 110 hurdles?? As if Hauck isn't tempted to fake it enough already . . .

Wasn't our last punter also an all state QB in HS?

I'm a bit surprised that more people aren't talking about this Matt Lipski kid. I notice that Montana State is now listed as a possible school. They weren't a few weeks ago . . .

http://oregonpreps.rivals.com/viewprosp ... 12&Sport=1

He's rated 5.4 from Rivals (the same Balogh was rated), the 6th best prospect in Oregon, with tons of room for improvement. According to the Ohio State board, UM offered him in October . . .

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/2008 ... ipski.html

He may end up being one of the steals of the class. I-A schools can't offer half scholarships and might not want to offer a full-ride for a "project", so he may face the choice of coming to Montana or walking on at Oregon or Oregon State. Apparently he just started playing football his sophomore year of HS.

It's not about quantity it's about quality. When a team loses 29 seniors there are going to be a lot of recruits. When a team loses less there are going to be less recruits. Most fans would rather be in MSU's situation.

I am sure most teams would love to have the same number of scholarships every year, but that is not always possible. We had year where we had true freshman and redshirt freshman played together and went all the way through together. It resulted in a large amount of open scholarships in one year.

One could look at the positive aspect that most of the players made it all the way through so there was good retention.

If the staff is able to get some real blue chip players that don't need to redshirt from this class then that would put them on track with last years class and help even out the disparity in the number of scholarships each year.

so what happens if we still have scholarships left, but there aren't any players left that are good enough to give them to? have we given some of our current players some of the excess scholarships that we have. seems like that would be the thing to do. maybe i'm overvaluing our surplus, but i don't like the idea of just giving out scholarships to h.s. players unless they're good enough.
