tripp will recover from his injury and be back in the fall!! i didnt know coyle got hurt? he played all season and had sacks and an INT in playoffs
also i agree if our safeties play lights out that will help the CB's get comfortable in the starting roll..
all in all i think this defense is going to be damn good!!

Where I agree: The 2012 defense has a lot of new and returning talent. The LB corps of Tripp/Coyle/JP with Timmer/Stu/Holt/Kose also in the mix will be crazy good. The single level of talent that was held by McSurdy will now be spread around. Harris I also do believe was/is the best DE the Griz had last year as a pass rusher.
Where I disagree: Waldo most certainly was not over-rated, DTs/NTs rarely put up flashy stats and their work in the trenches goes largely unnoticed. He led the team in sacks in 2010 and 2011. He was/is a force on the D-line and the most consistant player of the whole bunch. Alt I put in the similar category, pass-rush wasn't his specialty but edge containment was. Fether wound up splitting a ton of time with Harris, he never fully found his footing but I think was a solid part of the team. Takai needs work, IMO, he's got the size, but he needs to find a consistant level to play at which I've not seen him do in the last 2 years. For Tonga it's either peaks or valleys. Tonga will take that gap-stuffing role and I think the guys actually that will really make a splash this year will be Alex Bienemann and Jesse Ginn.

Safety is solid, assuming Tully cleans up his tackling.
Corner is raw but good, Murray, Frank, Harris, Miles, & Goodwin will duke it out. I almost wonder if they'll look to move one of the young safeties to challenge this spot as well, Lebsock or Gratton?

Anyone who thinks Waldo was overrated obviously knows nothing about football. He was a stud, as well as a great kid!

Well said. Waldo was maybe 265 soaking wet and he would physically punish anyone lined up against him. If anything Walhauser has been very UNDERRATED in his career.
garizzalies wrote:agree re waldo. I thought we'd miss Hobbs bigtime in '11 but now i'm thinking we'll miss waldo even more in '12. there were a few games in his career where he was more than just an impact player, he dictated the outcome. 2011 vs. NAU comes to mind. he was more consistent than duncan. what he lacked in size he made up with in determination. if you could put waldo's heart in Duncan or Tonga's body...wow, look out. that's why sometimes i'm more excited about walk-ons than recruits.

I wouldn't place two freshmen, although redshirted, so high just yet, even by the time of the Cat-Griz game; I'd consider "Chief" Goodwin, a 6'0" 185 lb Jr CB that has run a 10.6 100 m (40 tackles, 13 pass breakups, 2 Int. - one a pick-6), and a Jacob Coogan in the mix sooner, though Connor Lebsock is indeed intriguing. Coogan, Jr Safety 6'2" 205 lbs, out of Mater Dei hs in San Diego has some pretty decent accolades as well.

wow that is fast.....that would be about a 9.6 100yd.....if this guy has any football savvy to read the quarterback and cover his man at the same time i would agree with you 100%...no freshman is going to compete with that-speed, college experience (level) and ability.
