Great news, just saw some players on twitter giving him congrats.

Ty's a great fit for DC, his attitude will keep our D mean and agressive, this is a huge break for him. I know the players will respond well to him too. So the next question... who will coach the LBs?

He will. The question is who will coach the safeties?

I'd heard that if Gregorak is hired that Aric Williams will take the whole secondary, but that was someone just someone assuming that'd be a natural fit.

I know you can't over generalize, but I love the "linebacker" attitude. Some years ago, I worked for a company in a competitive industry and my boss was a former FBS level linebacker. He was a roll up your sleeves and punch the competition in the mouth sort of guy and I really enjoyed my time with him. Yep, I got yelled at a time or two and challenged a lot, but it made me better. To me, Gregorak is the embodiment of that "linebacker" attitude -- in your face, aggressive, demanding and assertive. His time working with Breske is a bonus as well. I am looking forward to seeing Gregorak's product on the field starting in September.

Yeah we'll see since currently there is an open spot for an assistant on defense. I feel like Gregorak is way too good working with the LB's to hire someone else. Leaving Williams just with the corners and bringing in a new young coach to coach the safeties seems like the most natural fit to me.

Congratulations Ty!!! This is a good move in my mind. Ty is very deserving and this will be a great opportunity for him and for the Griz. The choice is also a logical one. I wish he would have been named earlier but maybe they had to perform a national search to prevent a lot of criticism from some of the second-guessers.

I am hoping the other open positions will be filled in the same manner with quality coaches starting with Justin Green who in my opinion is a natural hire. We won't do better than him as a running backs coach or as an individual.

Interesting. At my last company, my CIO was a former FBS linebacker. When I took over as CEO and found that out, I was excited for the very reasons you mentioned above. Unfortunately I quickly learned he was fat, lazy, shiftless and incompetent. He slept in meetings and you couldn't walk into his office because it stunk so bad and looked like a garbage dump. His Director of IT was the REAL brains behind the operation, and he (the CIO) busrolled him and got him fired.

Then again, the CIO went to Northwestern State. Does that REALLY count? :D :D :D :D :D

EDIT: Oh, and big props to Gregorak. He's the perfect hire!

My thoughts on having the DC also taking a position are mixed. Safety play overall with Breske as DC were the weaker spots on this defense the last two years. I have no facts to back it up but I can't help but wonder that without a specific position coach the safeties just did not progress as well as the LBs and Dline.

I totally disagree. I thought the safety play improved dramatically through the year. Our linebackers were good all year. I think Breske did a tremendous job working with the safeties. Especially because of how exposed they are playing in such an aggressive defense.

Not having Gregorak also coach the linebackers would be a BAD move IMO

Personally, I think you both may be right. Safety play overall was one of the weaker spots last year, but it improved dramatically though the year.

Safety play was the achilies heel of the Griz defense last season, and did "improve" later in the season--that's only natural however as it's a well known fact that everyone "improves" with experience.

Glad is an understatement!!! Great for everyone. He wii do a great job! Quit being concerned about coaching LBs. Ty will be in charge .....no sweat!

I agree. Although it seems like our coordinators have always coached a position - Breske/safeties, Smith/QB's, Paulson/DE's, Phenicie/QB's.. Which to me says the $ isn't there to hire the extra position coach. It appears there is a spot available for another position's coach on D in 2012.

I expect Gregorak to be DC/LB's coach and Pflu to hire another position coach for the safeties. Assuming the $ is there to do so. Having Williams coach CB and safeties is a huge gamble IMO. Not saying Williams isn't capable of coaching the safeties, just think that position requires a little more attention than any other on D.

Green has already been hired.
