My thoughts on having the DC also taking a position are mixed. Safety play overall with Breske as DC were the weaker spots on this defense the last two years. I have no facts to back it up but I can't help but wonder that without a specific position coach the safeties just did not progress as well as the LBs and Dline.

I agree. Although it seems like our coordinators have always coached a position - Breske/safeties, Smith/QB's, Paulson/DE's, Phenicie/QB's.. Which to me says the $ isn't there to hire the extra position coach. It appears there is a spot available for another position's coach on D in 2012.

I expect Gregorak to be DC/LB's coach and Pflu to hire another position coach for the safeties. Assuming the $ is there to do so. Having Williams coach CB and safeties is a huge gamble IMO. Not saying Williams isn't capable of coaching the safeties, just think that position requires a little more attention than any other on D.

The maximum number of coaches a FCS team can have is 11, which is what they had last year. FBS teams can have 12 coaches. It's pretty common to have coordinators coach a position at both levels.

Every Griz DC since at least 1986 has also coached a position That's IAA football. That a true frosh became starter last years says a lot about were the problem was with the safeties. A true frosh starter in zone blitz scheme? Lets just say the talent in the upper classes just wasn't there.

Green has already been hired.

Not disagreeing but I haven't seen anything official on this. Do you have a printed source? Thanks.

The printed source should be the Missoulian but they haven't picked it up yet. All they have to do is ask Pflu. It's been out there ever since Delaney said he was retiring.

That would be great news as far as I am concerned. I am a big Justin Green fan.

This is becoming a good young coaching staff.

Personally, I think you both may be right. Safety play overall was one of the weaker spots last year, but it improved dramatically though the year.

i think the improvment was more likely due to recruiting than coaching (e.g.,hermanson). That's not a slam on Breske, just a fact. he was my fav DC.

Ty should most def stay with LBs, and we need a ringer for the safties as it is too vital a position to not have a position coach there. Wasn't stoll considering GA work or am i thinking of some other recent UM FS/SS?

Congatulations to Coach Ty! However this had to be the worst kept secret in town. I haven't talked to anyone who thought that once the announcement was made that it would be anyone other than Gregorak. Even on this board which is famous for its speculations, there was little to no discussion of anyone else. Nevertheless I am glad it's official.

As for the issue of which unit Ty should coach it only makes sense to have him coaching the linebackers. The middle linebacker position is the one that calls the defensive sets. To have your DC also being your linebacker coach can only make the team better. The most obvious position to fill would be for a new Safeties coach, but time will tell.

Just saw the article on Gregorak indicates an new OC could be named by Saturday. Any word on who that is?

I'm guessing a certain former Griz coach that's currently an assistant coach for a MAC team.

I hope it isn't Cole. He bounces around like a ping pong ball. This would be his 7th school in 12 years. I don't think that adds to a program's stability. Does he know offense? Yes. But I still don't think he is what we need. That's my opinion only and I'm sticking to it. Be thankful I don't make the decision.

I thought Cole was a very good OC when he was here. We had a very effective running game with Yohance in the backfield. But one thing I remember about him then (with Drew Miller at quarterback) is that he did not like the shotgun. Anybody know what kinds of offenses or offensive schemes he's been associated with in recent years?

Interesting choice. I noticed Doeren recently replaced the OC at NIU and chose to hire someone from the outside rather than promote from within. I wonder if Cole is leaving due to being passed over for that position...twice.

Coaching stability is not a priority at UM and it doesn't look like that is changing anytime soon. Just keep taking chances on coaches who want to take pay cuts and hope it works out.

Burn 'em and Turn 'em.

Not sure if it's happneing, it's just my thought that it may...

That said, go look at NIU's numbers on offense, they run a spread as well and put up some seriously good stats. Cole wasn't the OC but he played a big part in it.

i have a strong tendency to agree with you here Brint........other than hermanson who play consistently, mccord less consistently, and they saw something in tully i was unable to see, especially as much time as he got over rominger the safety positions are/were questionable based on strength of the position and progression of improvement over the season.
